Petford is a rural locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the , Petford had a population of 32 people. Geography ''Emu Creek'' flows through from east to north, where it joins the ''Walsh River'' as it forms part of the northern boundary. ''California Creek'', a tributary of the '' Tate River'', forms much of the southern boundary. Two other tributaries of the ''Tate River'', ''Oaky Creek'' and ''Martin Creek'', rise in the locality. The former mining town of Lappa is within the locality. History The locality takes its name from the railway station which was named after John Joseph Petford, an official of Queensland Railways Department for many years. The railway station was on the Chillagoe Railway & Mining Co. line from Mareeba to Mount Garnet which opened its first section from Mareeba to Lappa, just south-west of Petford, in 1900. Lappa is a former railway town on the western side of the Atherton Tablelands near Petford, Queensland, Petford in the Shire of Mareeba in Far North Queensland, Australia. Geography Lappa is on the Burke Developmental Road which runs roughly east to west to the immediate north of the town. Cairns (, ) is a city in Queensland, Australia, on the tropical north east coast of Far North Queensland. Savannahlander
The Savannahlander is an Australian passenger train service (primarily serving tourists) that operates in Far North Queensland. It travels on the Tablelands railway line and the Etheridge railway line from the coastal city of Cairns to Forsayth. History The service was introduced on 3 April 1995 by Queensland Rail to replace the Forsayth Mixed (marketed as the 'Last Great Train Ride'). The line was closed from Mareeba to Mount Surprise at the same time. It was initially run with a 2000 class railmotor set that was refurbished at Townsville Workshops. This was only on the Mount Surprise to Forsayth section of the Etheridge line. However, after an upgrade of the line for sugar syrup trains from Cairns to Arriga, and a limited restoration of the rest of the line, the railmotor started travelling from Cairns to Forsayth in September 1998. Mareeba is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba in Far North Queensland, Australia. Between 2008 and 2013, it was within the Tablelands Region. The town's name is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning ''meeting of the waters''. Geography The town is above sea level on the confluence of the Barron River, Granite Creek and Emerald Creek. Chillagoe Railway & Mining Co
Chillagoe is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Mareeba, Queensland, Australia. In the the locality of Chillagoe had a population of 251 people. It was once a thriving mining town for a range of minerals, but is now reduced to a small zinc mine and some marble quarries. Just out of town is the Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park containing limestone caves. There are between 600 and 1,000 caves in the Chillagoe-Mungana area. The caves, the spectacular karst landscape and the mining and smelting history are the main tourist attractions to the region.
