Petersburg Borough is a borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. According to the 2020 census, the population was 3,398. The borough seat is Petersburg. Petersburg is the most recently created county equivalent in the United States. History When the borough incorporated in 2013, it took area from the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area and the former Petersburg Census Area. The remaining portion of Petersburg Census Area (including Kake) was added to Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area. Petersburg Census Area was created in 2008 from the remaining portion of Wrangell-Petersburg Census Area upon the incorporation of the City and Borough of Wrangell. Geography Located in central Southeast Alaska, the Petersburg Borough encompasses approximately 3,829 square miles (2,921 square miles of land, 908 square miles of water). Five Finger Islands Light
The Five Finger Islands Light is a lighthouse located on a small island that lies between Stephens Passage and Frederick Sound in Alaska Panhandle, southeastern Alaska. It and Sentinel Island Light Station were the first U.S. government lighthouses opened in Alaska, first lit on March 21, 1902. It became the last lighthouse in Alaska to be automated on August 14, 1984. History In 1901, a contract of $22,500 was awarded to construct a lighthouse on the southernmost of the Five Finger Islands. Completed in 1902, it was a rectangular lighthouse with a square tower, elevated several feet above the surrounding hipped roof. The City and Borough of Wrangell ( tli, Ḵaachx̱ana.áakʼw, russian: Врангель) is a borough in Alaska, United States. As of the 2020 census the population was 2,127, down from 2,369 in 2010. Incorporated as a Unified Home Rule Borough on May 30, 2008, Wrangell was previously a city in the Wrangell-Petersburg Census Area (afterwards renamed the Petersburg Census Area (the Petersburg Borough was formed from part of this census area)). Hobart Bay, Alaska
Hobart Bay is a census-designated place that was located in Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, Alaska during the 2010 United States Census, but is now part of Petersburg Borough. As of the 2010 Census, the population of the CDP was one, down from three in 2000. The bay was named in 1889 by Lieutenant Commander Mansfield of the United States Navy. The site was first settled as a logging camp. The population has declined in recent years. Nevertheless, on January 3, 2013, Hobart Bay and a sizable portion of the Hoonah-Angoon Census Area around it were incorporated into the new Petersburg Borough, which has the city of Petersburg as its economic center and is composed primarily of land from the former Petersburg Census Area. Kupreanof (LingĂt: ''Aansadaak’w'') is a city at the eastern shore of Kupreanof Island in the Petersburg Borough, in the U.S. state of Alaska. The population was 21 as of the 2020 census, down from 27 in 2010. It is the smallest incorporated city in the state as of 2020. History Among the incorporators of Kupreanof were former longtime and much beloved Petersburg Grade School Principal Harold Bergman. Prince of Wales–Hyder Census Area is a census area located in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,753, up from 5,559 in 2010. It is part of the unorganized borough and therefore has no borough seat. Its largest communities are Metlakatla and Craig.
