Peter The Great (1895–1923) was an American Standardbred horse. A descendant of Hambletonian 10 Hambletonian 10, or Rysdyk's Hambletonian, (May 5, 1849 – March 27, 1876) was an American trotter and a founding sire of the Standardbred horse breed. Standardbred
The Standardbred is an American horse breed best known for its ability in harness racing, where members of the breed compete at either a trot or pace. Developed in North America, the Standardbred is recognized worldwide, and the breed can trace its bloodlines to 18th-century England. They are solid, well-built horses with good dispositions. In addition to harness racing, the Standardbred is used for a variety of equestrian activities, including horse shows and pleasure riding, particularly in the Midwestern and Eastern United States and in Southern Ontario. History In the 17th century, the first trotting races were held in the Americas, usually in fields on horses under saddle. Hambletonian 10, or Rysdyk's Hambletonian, (May 5, 1849 – March 27, 1876) was an American trotter and a founding sire of the Standardbred horse breed. The stallion was born in Sugar Loaf, New York, on 5 May 1849. Hambletonian has been inducted into the Immortals category of the Harness Racing Hall of Fame. Origin and early years Hambletonian 10 was bred by Jonas Seely, Jr., on his farm at Sugar Loaf in Orange County, New York. He was sired by Abdallah, a grandson of the hugely influential Thoroughbred sire, Messenger. Abdallah was ugly in body and temperament, so much so that he was sold to a fish peddler for $5. Hambletonian's dam was known as the Charles Kent mare or the "Kent Mare", sired by Bellfounder (GB), an imported Norfolk Trotter. The University Press of Kentucky (UPK) is the scholarly publisher for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and was organized in 1969 as successor to the University of Kentucky Press. The university had sponsored scholarly publication since 1943. In 1949, the press was established as a separate academic agency under the university president, and the following year Bruce F. Denbo, then of Louisiana State University Press, was appointed as the first full-time professional director. Denbo served as director of UPK until his retirement in 1978, building a small but distinguished list of scholarly books with emphasis on American history and literary criticism. Since its reorganization, the Press has represented a consortium that now includes all of Kentucky's state universities, seven of its private colleges, and two historical societies. The Oaklands
The Oaklands is a bed and breakfast owned by Western Michigan University, located at 1815 West Michigan Avenue in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. History Robert S. Babcock came to Kalamazoo in 1850 and opened a dry goods store. He prospered, and in 1869 he left to head the new First National Bank. At the same time, Babcock had this home constructed, finishing in 1870. Babcock named it "The Oaklands." However, the Panic of 1873 forced Babcock to sell his home. The Oaklands was vacant for a time, owned by E.R. Gard of Chicago. In 1876, the house caught fire, just before it was to be auctioned to satisfy a debt to local wagonmaker Benjamin Austin. Austin rebuilt the house and lived there through the 1880s. In 1893, he turned it over to his daughter, Amelia, and her husband Daniel Streeter. Streeter had been a railroad builder, first in Wyoming and Colorado.
