Peter Smith (May 26, 1877 – May 21, 1934) was a Canadian politician. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario for Perth South from 1919 to 1923 representing the United Farmers of Ontario The United Farmers of Ontario (UFO) was an agrarian and populist provincial political party in Ontario, Canada. It was the Ontario provincial branch of the United Farmers movement of the early part of the 20th century. History Foundation and r .... He served as provincial treasurer from 1919 to 1923. He was treasurer during the Ontario Bond Scandal. Smith was tried for his role in the scandal following the fall of the UFO government. On October 24, 1924, he was found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the government and sentenced to three years. He and Aemilius Jarvis (sentenced to six months on the same conviction) were jointly fined $600,000. He died in 1934. John Bennewies
John Bennewies (November 20, 1863 – June 22, 1943) was an Ontario farmer and political figure. He represented Perth South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Conservative member from 1914 to 1919. Stratford is a city on the Avon River within Perth County in southwestern Ontario, Canada, with a 2016 population of 31,465 in a land area of . Stratford is the seat of Perth County, which was settled by English, Irish, Scottish and German immigrants, in almost equal numbers, starting in the 1820s but primarily in the 1830s and 1840s. The Ontario Bond Scandal was a criminal case that was brought against the former Ontario provincial treasurer, Peter Smith (Canadian), Peter Smith and Smith's associates in 1924 and 1925. Edward Aemilius Jarvis (April 25, 1860 – December 19, 1940) was a Canadian financier, equestrian, and sailor. Life and career A member of a Toronto family of Loyalist descent, Jarvis apprenticed as a banker, and eventually became president of the Trader's Bank of Canada. Jarvis founded the Steel Company of Canada. He built Toronto's iconic King Edward Hotel and created the British Columbia Salmon Canning Industry. Jarvis also formed Æmilius Jarvis & Co., earning the friendship and respect of such men as Lord Minto (Governor General of Canada), J.P.
