Peter Schärli
Peter Schärli (29 May 1955) is a Swiss jazz trumpeter. Biography When he was ten years old, he started to learn trumpet. He continued his studies at the Lucern jazz school while working as a clerk. He joined the blues band Exodus as a singer, pianist, and trumpeter in 1974. From 1977 to 1981, he attended the Swiss jazz school in Bern and graduated with a master's degree. He worked with Urs Blöchlinger and John Wolf Brennan. In 1982, he formed a trio with Marco Kappeli and Thomas Durst. The group expanded to a quartet with the addition of Hans Koch and guitarist Giancarlo Nicolai. Koch's place was taken by Roland Philipp, and Glenn Ferris also became a member. In 1994, the Peter Schärli Special sextet was formed with Ferris, Tom Varner, Dürst, Hans Feigenwinter, and Béatrice Graf. Rick Margitza
Rick Margitza (born October 24, 1961) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Biography Margitza's paternal grandfather, a Hungarian Gypsy violinist, taught him to play the violin at the age of four. His father also played violin with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Following this he played piano and oboe, and settled on tenor sax while in Fordson High School. He attended several colleges: Wayne State University, Berklee College of Music, University of Miami, and Loyola University New Orleans. He toured with Maynard Ferguson and Flora Purim in the 1980s, and moved to New York City in 1988, where he played with Miles Davis. Between 1989 and 1991, Margitza released three albums for Blue Note Records, ''Color'', ''Hope'' and ''This Is New''. Q Magazine described Hope as "a soft, glancing rather affected record". Dom Um Romão (3 August 1925 – 27 July 2005) was a Brazilian jazz drummer and percussionist. Noted for his expressive stylings with the fusion band Weather Report, Romão also recorded with artists such as Cannonball Adderley, Paul Simon, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Jorge Ben, Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66, and Tony Bennett. He was the percussionist Tom Jobim brought to the studio for the album Jobim recorded with Frank Sinatra in 1967 for Reprise Records, '' Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim''. He died in Rio de Janeiro shortly after suffering a stroke. Werner Lüdi (April 22, 1936 – June 21, 2000) was a Swiss jazz musician (alto saxophone, alto- and baritone saxophone) and author. Biography Lüdi was born on April 22, 1936 in Poschiavo. He spent the early years of his life in Val Poschiavo and spent his youth in Landquart, Switzerland, Landquart, where he played accordion in a band. He became familiar with cool jazz and played baritone saxophone in Tone Schädler's band. In 1958, he moved to Hamburg, where he participated in jam sessions. In jam sessions, he got to know Peter Brötzmann, but he could not contact at first with a band of modern jazz. Paul Rutherford (trombonist)
Paul William Rutherford (29 February 1940 – 5 August 2007) was an English free improvisation, free improvising trombonist. Biography Born in Greenwich, South East (London sub region), South East London, England, Rutherford initially played saxophone but switched to trombone. During the 1960s, he taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1970, Rutherford, guitarist Derek Bailey (guitarist), Derek Bailey and bassist Barry Guy formed the improvising group Iskra 1903, which lasted until 1973. The formation was documented on a Iskra 1903, double album from Incus, later reissued with much bonus material on the three-CD set ''Chapter One'' (Emanem, 2000). Gerry Hemingway (born March 23, 1955) is an American drummer and composer. Hemingway was a member of the Anthony Braxton quartet from 1983 to 1994. He has also performed with Ernst Reijseger, Anthony Davis, Earl Howard, Leo Smith, George E. Lewis, Ray Anderson, Mark Helias, Reggie Workman, Michael Moore, Oliver Lake, Marilyn Crispell, Christy Doran, John Wolf Brennan, Don Byron, Cecil Taylor, and Cuong Vu. Hemingway received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his work in music composition in 2000, and was a student of Alan Dawson. He is a graduate of Foote School in New Haven. Co Streiff (Cornelia Streiff) (5 April 1959 in Zurich) is a Swiss jazz musician who combines the elements of free jazz with the music of Africa. She is a saxophonist and flutist. She was educated at a conservatory with the transverse flute as her main instrument and also at Jazz School St. Gallen with a saxophone. Since 1983, she has lived as a freelance artist. Her first bands and projects were Kadesh and Tobende Ordnung (Raging Order). In 1986, she began her collaboration with Irène Schweizer. She appeared in the Canaille Festivals mostly with Lindsay Cooper and Joëlle Léandre. She took part in different projects of the Vienna Art Orchestra from 1988 until 1995. Christy Doran
Christy Doran (born 1949) is a jazz guitarist born in Dublin, Ireland, and raised in Lucerne, Switzerland. Doran founded OM with Fredy Studer, Urs Leimgruber, and Bobby Burri in the 1970s; this ensemble recorded for ECM. He and Studer also worked on a Jimi Hendrix tribute project in the 1990s. Doran has worked with free jazz and avant-garde jazz musicians such as Marty Ehrlich, Robert Dick, Ray Anderson, Han Bennink, Albert Mangelsdorff, Louis Sclavis, Marilyn Mazur, Herb Robertson, John Wolf Brennan, , Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Phil Minton, Joe McPhee and Carla Bley. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
