Peter Mellars
Peter Mellars is a New Zealand former rugby league footballer and administrator who represented New Zealand. His son, Vince, is a professional rugby league player. New Zealand National Rugby League Team
The New Zealand national rugby league team (Māori: Tīma rīki motu Aotearoa) has represented New Zealand in rugby league since 1907. Administered by the New Zealand Rugby League, they are commonly known as the Kiwis, after the native bird of that name. The team's colours are black and white, with the dominant colour being black, and the players perform a haka before every match they play as a challenge to their opponents. The New Zealand Kiwis are currently second in the IRL World Rankings. Vince Mellars
Vincent "Vinny" Mellars (born 27 January 1984) is a New Zealand rugby league and rugby union footballer who plays in the Centres. He has previously played in the NRL, Super League and Air New Zealand Cup and in the RFL Championship for Featherstone Rovers. Background Vinny Mellars was born in Porirua, New Zealand. His father, Peter, was a New Zealand international. Early career Mellars played his junior rugby league for Wainuiomata and Petone. After being signed by the New Zealand Warriors he moved to Auckland, playing for Otahuhu in the 2002 Bartercard Cup. He also represented Wainuiomata and Wellington in the Bartercard Cup. Bartercard Cup
The Bartercard Cup (successor of the Lion Red Cup) was the top level rugby league club competition in New Zealand from 2000 until 2007. For the entire life of the tournament it was sponsored by Bartercard. The cup was administered by the New Zealand Rugby League. The tournament was discontinued by the NZRL in 2007 and was replaced by the Bartercard Premiership in 2008. Franchises The format of the competition changed several times over the life of the competition and in total 24 clubs or franchises competed. In the first season half of the clubs were from Auckland but as the competition went on more and more franchises represented the provinces.
