Peter Maher (runner)
Peter Kevin Maher (born March 30, 1960 in Ottawa, Ontario) is a former Canadian marathon runner who competed mainly in the 1990s. He was a resident of Thornhill, a suburb of Toronto. He was credited for a brief period with the world record time for 25 km. Maher represented Canada in the Olympic men's marathons in Seoul, 1988 and Barcelona, 1992. He is said to be the originator of the quote "Running is a big question mark that's there each and every day. It asks you, 'Are you going to be a wimp or are you going to be strong today." Maher also now runs a Sports Therapy Clinic in Carrigaline, Cork, Ireland. Peter Maher (boxer)
Peter Maher (born 16 March 1869, in Gunnode, Tuam, County Galway, Ireland – 22 July 1940 in Baltimore, Maryland) was an Irish boxer known for his powerful punch. Early in his career Maher won the 1888 Middleweight Championship of Ireland, and the 1890 Heavyweight Championship of Ireland. After moving to the United States he won the 1895 Heavyweight Championship of the World match by knocking out Steve O'Donnell in the first round. In 1896 Bob Fitzsimmons defeated Maher in a fight in Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico, and took the disputed heavyweight title. Peter Maher (sportscaster)
Peter Maher (born November 11, 1949) is a Canadian retired sportscaster. He was the radio voice of the Calgary Flames from their move to Calgary, Alberta, in 1980 until his retirement following the 2013–14 NHL season. He broadcast every Flames game for 33 years on the city's all-sports radio station, CFAC. Maher became known for his catchphrase, "Yeah Baby!" after a significant or important moment, and "You can put it in the win column!" after every Flames win. Early life Maher was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick. He began broadcasting at age 14 where he started announcing the line up for the Campbellton softball league. After high school, he had stints in the International Hockey League and North Shore Hockey League. Career Maher began his professional broadcasting career in 1977 calling play by play for the Toronto Maple Leafs on the radio. In 1980, he became the first ever radio voice of the Calgary Flames.
