Peter Haynes (mathematician)
Peter Howard Haynes (born 23 July 1958) is a British applied mathematician in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of Queens' College, Cambridge and served as Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) from 2005 to 2015. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford, and Queens' College, Cambridge (B.A. 1979, M.A. 1983, Ph.D. 1984). In physics, a fluid is a liquid, gas, or other material that continuously deforms (''flows'') under an applied shear stress, or external force. They have zero shear modulus, or, in simpler terms, are substances which cannot resist any shear force applied to them. Although the term ''fluid'' generally includes both the liquid and gas phases, its definition varies among branches of science. Definitions of ''solid'' vary as well, and depending on field, some substances can be both fluid and solid. Viscoelastic fluids like Silly Putty appear to behave similar to a solid when a sudden force is applied. Meteorology is a branch of the atmospheric sciences (which include atmospheric chemistry and physics) with a major focus on weather forecasting.
