Peter Ellis (architect)
Peter Ellis (1805–1884) was a British architect and inventor of the paternoster lift from Liverpool. From the mid-1840s he lived at 40 Falkner Square, a house which he designed and on which an English Heritage Blue Plaque is now sited. Buildings Peter Ellis designed Oriel Chambers in 1864 at the corner of Water Street and Covent Garden in Liverpool, considered by many architectural historians to be one of the most influential buildings of its age, a precursor of the modernist style in architecture and one of the earliest attempts to break away from the classical tradition of commercial architecture. It was described by Charles Reilly, Professor of Architecture at Liverpool University as the "oddest building in Liverpool, at once so logical and so disagreeable...as a cellular habitation for the human insect it is a distinct asset to the town," and by Nikolaus Pevsner as "one of the most remarkable buildings of its date in Europe." Peter Ellis (born 30 May 1936) is an English actor. Ellis has worked extensively in theatre and television both as an actor and director. He spent four seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as spending five years at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, and three years with the Old Vic Company which included playing Benvolio in Zeffirelli's ''Romeo and Juliet'', Hotspur in '' Henry IV'' and later Rosencrantz in a world tour of ''Hamlet'' starring Derek Jacobi. He also played Guildenstern in ''Hamlet'' on the site of the new Globe Theatre, In the West End he appeared in ''The Tulip Tree'' and in Ray Cooney's ''Funny Money''. He is perhaps best known for playing the role of Chief Superintendent Charles Brownlow in the long running ITV drama ''The Bill''. Peter James Ellis (28 January 1948 – 24 April 2006) was a British director of television episodes, including episodes of shows such as “Supernatural” and “Criminal Minds”. Personal life He was born in London and educated at Highgate School, as were his brothers, Robin Ellis and Jack Ellis. Career He began his career at Granada TV in the UK, being placed on their Director's Course. In the late 1980s, he moved to Hollywood, California, where he was based for the rest of his life. Peter Hugh McGregor Ellis (30 March 1958 – 4 September 2019) was a New Zealand childcare worker who was wrongfully convicted of child sexual abuse. He was at the centre of one of the country's most enduring judicial controversies, after being found guilty in June 1993 in the High Court on 16 counts of sexual offences involving children in his care at the Christchurch Civic Creche and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment. He maintained his innocence until his death 26 years later and was supported by many New Zealanders in his attempts to overturn his convictions, although others believed he was guilty. Concerns about the reliability of the convictions centred on far-fetched stories told by many of the children (alleging Satanic ritual abuse) and the interview techniques used to obtain their testimony.
