Peter Augustus Jay (January 24, 1776 – February 20, 1843) was a prominent New York lawyer, politician and the eldest son of Founding Father and first United States Chief Justice John Jay. Early life Peter Augustus Jay was born at Liberty Hall", on January 24, 1776, at the home of his maternal grandparents' in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. Peter was one of six children born to John Jay and Sarah Van Brugh (née Livingston) Jay, and one of two boys (brother William was born in 1789) with four sisters: Susan (born and died in 1780); Maria (b. 1782), Ann (b. 1783) and Sarah Louisa (b. 1792). Jay's paternal grandparents were Peter Jay, who was born in New York City in 1704 and became a wealthy trader in furs, wheat, timber, and other commodities, and Mary Van Cortlandt, who had married in 1728. Peter Augustus Jay (October 23, 1821 – October 31, 1855) was an American heir. He was a grandson of Founding Father John Jay. Early life Jay was born in New York City on October 23, 1821. He was the second son among eight children born to Mary Rutherfurd (née Clarkson) Jay (1786–1838) and Peter Augustus Jay (1776–1843), the Recorder of New York City. His siblings included Dr. John Clarkson Jay, Mary Rutherfurd Jay (who married Frederick Prime); Sarah Jay (who married William Dawson); Catherine Helena Jay (who married Dr. Henry Augustus DuBois); Anna Maria Jay (who married Henry Evelyn Pierrepont); among others. His paternal grandparents were Sarah Van Brugh (née Livingston) Jay and John Jay, the Founding Father who was a diplomat, the first Chief Justice of the United States and two-time Governor of New York State. Peter Augustus Jay (August 23, 1877 – October 18, 1933) was an American diplomat who served as U.S. General Consul to Egypt, U.S. Minister to El Salvador and Romania and U.S. Ambassador to Argentina. Early life Jay was born on August 23, 1877 in Newport, Rhode Island. He was the son of Augustus Jay (1850–1919) and Emily Astor (née Kane) Jay (1854–1932). His younger brother was DeLancey Kane Jay (1881–1941). His paternal grandparents were Josephine (née Pearson) Jay and Peter Augustus Jay, himself the son of Peter Augustus Jay, a member of the New York State Assembly and Recorder of New York City, and grandson of John Jay, Founding Father and first United States Chief Justice. His maternal grandparents were DeLancey Kane and Louisa Dorothea (née Langdon) Kane. His maternal uncles included DeLancey Astor Kane, Commodore S.
