Peta (cat)
Manninagh KateDhu, commonly known as Peta (1963/64 – early 1980), was the Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office of the United Kingdom government between 1964 and , and was the first female cat in that role. She became the replacement of Peter III, who had died at the age of 16 in 1964. After Peter III's death, the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, Sir Ronald Garvey, suggested that a Manx cat be his replacement, and sent Peta to the Cabinet. She was noted to be lazy and loud, and not toilet trained. By 1969, some civil servants had tried to remove her from Cabinet, but this did not happen, because of the suspected bad publicity that this action would incur. She was not heard of again, until a reply to a member of the public in 1976 revealed that she had retired to the home of a civil servant. Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office is the title of the official resident cat at 10 Downing Street, the residence and executive office of the prime minister of the United Kingdom in London. There has been a resident cat in the British government employed as a mouser and pet since the 16th century, although modern records date only to the 1920s. Despite other cats having served Downing Street, the first one to be given the official title of Chief Mouser by the British government was Larry in 2011. Other cats have been given this title affectionately, usually by the British press. In 2004, a study was conducted showing that voters' perceptions of the Chief Mouser were not completely above partisanship. Manx Cat
The Manx cat (, in earlier times often spelled Manks) is a breed of domestic cat (''Felis catus'') originating on the Isle of Man, with a naturally occurring mutation that shortens the tail. Many Manx have a small stub of a tail, but Manx cats are best known as being entirely tailless; this is the most distinguishing characteristic of the breed, along with elongated hind legs and a rounded head. Manx cats come in all coat colours and patterns, though all-white specimens are rare, and the coat range of the original stock was more limited. Long-haired variants are sometimes considered a separate breed, the Cymric. Manx are prized as skilled hunters, and thus have often been sought by farmers with rodent problems, and been a preferred ship's cat breed. They are said to be social, tame and active. Sir Ronald Herbert Garvey (4 July 1903, in Lincolnshire – 31 May 1991) was a British Colonial Service administrator who served in the Pacific, the West Indies, and as Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man at the end of his career. Biography Education and early career A parson's son from the Lincolnshire Wolds, Garvey was admitted on a choral scholarship to Trent College ( Long Eaton) where he studied from 1916 to 1923. He then entered Emmanuel College at the University of Cambridge, where he read history and graduated B.A. in anthropology, while preparing to take the civil service examination, hoping to join the Indian Civil Service. He became involved in breaking the 1926 general strike, and did not find time to study for this examination, and instead applied for a position in the Colonial Service. Wilberforce ( – 19 May 1988) was a cat living at 10 Downing Street who was employed as the chief mouser to the Cabinet Office from 1973 to 1987. He served throughout the premierships of four prime ministers: Edward Heath, Harold Wilson, James Callaghan and Margaret Thatcher. In obituaries published shortly after his death, he was described as the "best mouser in Britain". Early life and career Wilberforce was an eight-week-old kitten when he was adopted from the Hounslow branch of the RSPCA in 1973. History Peter III became Chief Mouser in August 1947, following the death of Peter II, who had been hit by a car. Peter III attracted the widespread public attention following an appearance on the BBC in 1958.
