Pesi Shroff
Pesi Shroff (b. 1965) is a former India, Indian champion jockey. He has ridden 5614 races and won 1,751 of them including 106 classic races and 29 Derbys. Born to a Parsis, Parsi family, he began his career at 16 years old when he was licensed to ride by the Royal Western India Turf Club in Mumbai in the 1981. He won his first race on ''My Squaw''. Pesi had a long association with Indian liquor baron Vijay Mallya having been a retainer for him for several years. Apart from Mallya, he has also ridden for leading owners of the Indian turf like M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Deepak Khaitan, and Khushroo Dhunjibhoy . To date, he is the only jockey to have piloted eight Derby (horse race), Derby winners at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, Mumbai and has ridden a classic winner in each of the five major racing centres of India. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Mahalaxmi Racecourse
The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a horse racing track in Mahalaxmi neighbourhood of Mumbai. The track is oval shaped with straight chute, spread over approximately of open land in the heart of Mumbai city. It was created out of a marshy land known as Mahalakshmi Flats. Built in 1883 and modelled on the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, it is spread over land facing the sea. The racecourse was originally donated by Sir Cusrow N Wadia and today it is on lease from the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to Royal Western India Turf Club which runs the racecourse. The Grandstand, off the course, is a designated heritage structure. The racecourse is the only helipad open for civilian use in South Mumbai. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. Karl Umrigar
Karl Umrigar (4 October 1960 – 3 May 1979) born to a Parsi family, was a champion Indian jockey in the 1970s. His family sponsors a Karl Umrigar Trophy every year in his memory. He is survived by his parents Jimmy and Nan Umrigar, his sister Tina who is married to champion Jockey and Horse Trainer Pesi Shroff. Karl became a famous Indian jockey at the age of 17. In the 1978-79 Mahalaxmi racing season, Karl Umrigar who rode 144 mounts that season with 54 winners, 33 seconds, 22 thirds and 17 fourths, only 18 of his rides failing to finish in the frame.
