Peruna Drug Manufacturing Company Building
The Peruna Drug Manufacturing Company Building was a historic building in Downtown Columbus, Ohio. It was built c. 1902 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in March 1973. The building was demolished in November 1973. The Peruna Drug Manufacturing Company Building was a two-story brick building, and one of the most ornate commercial buildings in the city. It measured 100 x 120 ft. It had ornate north and west facades of marble over brick, while the east and south facades were simply of brick. The building was constructed for Samuel B. Hartman's Peruna Drug Manufacturing Company, makers of the Peruna medicine. It was first built c. 1902, was nearly completed by 1904 when a worker's torch ignited packing materials, lighting the building on fire. The building was salvaged and fully occupied by 1906. Peruna (patent Medicine)
Peruna was a well-known patent medicine sold from the late-19th to mid-20th century. It was patented by Samuel Brubaker Hartman and endorsed by hundreds of politicians. Hartman began selling the product on July 29, 1885, and advertised it as curing catarrh. At its peak, Hartman was earning $100,000 a day from Peruna sales. The drug was reportedly so popular that babies were named after it, as was the mascot of Southern Methodist University. Peruna once released an ad with fifty United States Congressmen endorsing the product. In a series of eleven articles the journalist Samuel Hopkins Adams wrote for ''Collier's'' in 1905, titled "The Great American Fraud", he exposed many of the false claims made about patent medicines, pointing out that in some cases, these medicines were damaging the health of the people using them. Demolition (also known as razing, cartage, and wrecking) is the science and engineering in safely and efficiently tearing down of buildings and other artificial structures.
