Permian Panthers
Permian High School is a public high school located in Odessa, Texas and is one of three high schools in the Ector County Independent School District. It was the subject of the book '' Friday Night Lights'', which in turn inspired a movie and TV series of the same name. History Opened in 1959, Permian High is named for the Permian Basin, the geological formation that underlies Midland and Odessa. The name stems from the age of the rocks in the basin where the school is located, which are from the geological period that preceded the largest mass extinction in the history of life. The Permian Basin is the source of the large oil and natural gas deposits that drive the region's economy. Permian High began adding freshmen to the campus during the 2015-2016 school year. Ector County Independent School District (ECISD) is a public school district based in Odessa, Texas, United States. In addition to the majority of Odessa (the portions in Ector County), the district also serves the communities of West Odessa, Gardendale, and Goldsmith, as well as rural areas in Ector County. The Chicago Bears are a professional American football team based in Chicago. Gary Gaines
Gary Gaines (May 4, 1949 – August 22, 2022) was an American football coach. Gaines was the head coach of the 1988 Permian High School football team, which was the focus of Buzz Bissinger's book '' Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream'' and the 2004 motion picture '' Friday Night Lights'' starring Billy Bob Thornton. His coaching career spanned four decades, coaching at eight high schools and two colleges, all in Texas. Early life Gaines was born in Crane, Texas. He played quarterback at Angelo State University from 1967 through 1970, earning letters during all four years. John Wilkins (American Football Coach)
John Wilkins is a former American football coach. He was highly successful in his 13 years as head coach of Permian High School in Odessa, Texas, amassing a 148–16–7 record and two Class 5A state titles. John was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor July 30, 2003. Wilkins became head coach at Odessa Permian in 1973 after serving as an assistant to Gil Bartosh. In 1975, Permian made the state final for the first time during Wilkins' tenure, but lost 20–10 to Port Neches-Groves. Five years later, Odessa Permian faced Port Arthur Jefferson, guided by Ronnie Thompson and led by quarterback Todd Dodge. Permian won the game 28–19. Wilkins' 1984 squad tied Beaumont French for the title. The next year, Permian lost to Houston Yates in a 37–0 blowout at the Texas Stadium. Gil Bartosh
Gilbert C. Bartosh Sr. (May 21, 1930 – June 4, 2016) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) from 1974 to 1976, compiling a record of 6–28. Considered the greatest player ever to come out of Granger, Bartosh was dubbed the "Granger Ghost." He starred at Granger from 1945 to 48 before a four-year career at Texas Christian University (TCU), where he played quarterback under coach Dutch Meyer and led the Southwest Conference in total offense his junior season in 1951, when he was also named an All-American. In 1952 however, he had to take a backseat behind Ray McKown. Bartosh was drafted by the Baltimore Colts as the 314th Pick (Round 27) of the 1952 NFL Draft, but never played in the NFL. Gene Mayfield
Clurel Eugene Mayfield, known as Gene Mayfield (January 31, 1928 – October 2, 2009), was an American football coach in Texas high schools and at West Texas A&M University. In May 2005, Mayfield was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Hall of Fame. Mayfield was born in Quitaque in Briscoe County in the lower Texas Panhandle to James Andrew Mayfield (1900–1993) and the former Irma Graves (1901–1984). He graduated from Quitaque High School and attended a year of college before he joined the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his Army discharge, Mayfield finished college on the G.I. Bill of Rights. He played quarterback and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from West Texas A&M, then West Texas State University, at Canyon, south of Amarillo. Legacy High School, formerly known as Robert E. Lee High School, is a public, co-educational secondary school in Midland, Texas. Legacy High School is a part of the Midland Independent School District. In October 2020, the Midland school board voted to rename the school "Legacy High School". Odessa High School (OHS) is a public high school located in Odessa, Texas, United States. It is one of three high schools in the Ector County Independent School District. The full name of the school is Odessa Senior High School. This name was originally to differentiate it from Odessa Junior High School (now known as David Crockett Middle School). Normally, the school is commonly referred to as Odessa High or just OHS. In 2011, the school was rated "Academically Acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. On April 17, 2014 Odessa High School was named an AVID National Demonstration School. The student body of Odessa High School is composed of freshmen (grade 9) through seniors (grade 12). Ratliff Stadium
Ratliff Stadium is a stadium in Odessa, Texas. It is primarily used for American football, and is the home field for the city's two public high schools, Odessa and Permian High Schools. The stadium opened in 1982 and holds 17, 931 people (capacity was reduced from the original 19,302 people when additional handicapped seating and accomodations were added in 2008). It was the stadium used during filming of most of the football action in the 2004 movie '' Friday Night Lights'', an adaptation of a 1990 book about Permian's 1988 football season.
