Permanent Defence Force Other Ranks Representative Association
The Permanent Defence Force Other Ranks Representative Association (PDFORRA) is the representative body for enlisted personnel serving in the Defence Forces of Ireland. The purpose of PDFORRA is to represent and pursue the interests of enlisted personnel serving full-time in the Irish Army, Naval Service and Air Corps. The remit of the organisation includes issues regarding the pay and conditions of serving enlisted ranks in the Republic of Ireland. All serving enlisted members of the Permanent Defence Forces (PDF) are entitled to become members of the association. The Irish Army, known simply as the Army ( ga, an tArm), is the land component of the Defence Forces of Ireland.The Defence Forces are made up of the Permanent Defence Forces – the standing branches – and the Reserve Defence Forces. The Army is part of the PDF. Approximately 7,300 people served in the Irish Army on a permanent basis , and there were 1,600 active reservists, divided into two geographically organised brigades. By late September 2020, this had reduced to 6,878 permanent army personnel. The Naval Service ( ga, An tSeirbhís Chabhlaigh) is the maritime component of the Defence Forces of Ireland and is one of the three branches of the Irish Defence Forces. Its base is in Haulbowline, County Cork. Though preceded by earlier maritime defence organisations, the Naval Service was formed in 1946. Since the 1970s a major role of the Naval Service has been the provision of fisheries protection in Ireland's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Other roles include sea patrol, surveillance, and smuggling prevention. The Representative Association of Commissioned Officers (RACO) is a representative body for officers of the Defence Forces of Ireland. RACO was formally established in 1991 by statute under the Defence Amendment Act. Defence Forces Regulation S.6 is the Statutory Instrument that gives effect to the Act and governs, ''inter alia'', the establishment, funding and operation of representative associations in the Defence Forces. Reserve Defence Forces Representative Association
The Reserve Defence Forces Representative Association (RDFRA) ( ga, Comhlachas lonadaitheach na nÓglach Cúltaca) is the representative body for all ranks of the Reserve Defence Forces (RDF) in Ireland. RDFRA was founded in 1992 and is responsible for representing and furthering the interests of active service members of the Irish Reserve Defence Forces, which is made up of the Army Reserve (AR) and Naval Service Reserve (NSR). Membership is open to all officer and other ranked personnel of the Reserve. Funding comes from government subvention and annual membership deductions. The Ombudsman for the Defence Forces was established as an independent statutory body as a result of the Ombudsman (Defence Forces) Act 2004. It is charged with dealing with complaints made by current and former members of the Defence Forces – including the Army, Naval Service, Air Corps and Reserve Defence Forces.
