Permanent Committee On Geographical Names For British Official Use
The Permanent Committee on Geographical Names (PCGN) is an independent inter-departmental body in the United Kingdom established in 1919. Its function is to establish standard names for places outside the UK, for the use of the British government. The Committee has collaborated with the Foreign Names Committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names to agree a joint romanization system, first published in 1994 as the ''Romanization Systems and Roman-Script Spelling Conventions''. The members of the PCGN are: British Broadcasting Corporation Monitoring Service, Intelligence Collection Group (ICG) (formerly Defence Geospatial Intelligence), Defence Intelligence Staff, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Government Communications Headquarters, Hydrographic Office, Ordnance Survey, Royal Geographical Society and Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Permanent Committee on Geographical Names ( (StAGN)) is an independent scientific organization on the standardization of geographical names of German-speaking area. It is an independent scientific body based in Frankfurt am Main. Responsibilities and working methods The central tasks of the Permanent Committee on Geographic Names include the recommendation, promotion, and development of rules for the consistent use of geographic names. These agendas were established in a set of rules in 1975, which were updated in 2010. The aim of the StAGN's activities is to standardize the official and private use of geographic names in the German-speaking area by issuing relevant recommendations and guidelines. The StAGN represents these recommendations and resolutions both domestically and internationally, participating in the development of geographic name lists that are in line with the recommendations of United Nations resolution for the standardization of geographic names. The Geographical Names Board of Canada (GNBC) is a national committee with a secretariat in Natural Resources Canada, part of the Government of Canada, which authorizes the names used and name changes on official federal government maps of Canada. History It was created in December 1897, by Order in Council, as the Geographic Board of Canada. It consisted of one Board member from each of four Government of Canada departments, as well as the Surveyor General of Dominion Lands, while a secretariat was provided by the then-extant Department of the Interior. In December 1899, the Order in Council was amended to give the Canadian provinces and territories the right to nominate one official, each, to be a Board member.
