Perl Island, also known as Pearl Island, is a mountainous island off the Kenai Peninsula coast of Alaska. One of the Chugach Islands, it is about long and wide. It is named for Perl D. Kenai Peninsula
The Kenai Peninsula ( Dena'ina: ''Yaghenen'') is a large peninsula jutting from the coast of Southcentral Alaska. The name Kenai (, ) is derived from the word "Kenaitze" or "Kenaitze Indian Tribe", the name of the Native Athabascan Alaskan tribe, the Kahtnuht’ana Dena’ina ("People along the Kahtnu (Kenai River)"), who historically inhabited the area. They called the Kenai Peninsula ''Yaghanen'' ("the good land"). Geography The peninsula extends about southwest from the Chugach Mountains, south of Anchorage. It is separated from the mainland on the west by Cook Inlet and on the east by Prince William Sound. Most of the peninsula is part of the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Chugach , Chugach Sugpiaq or Chugachigmiut is the name of an Alaska Native people in the region of the Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound on the southern coast of Alaska. The Chugach people are an Alutiiq ( Pacific Eskimo) people who speak the Chugach dialect of the Alutiiq language. Name Their autonym ''Sugpiaq'' derives from ''suk'', meaning "person" and -''piaq'', meaning "real." The term ''Alutiiq'' derives from the Russian term for the Aleut people. Kodiak, Alaska
Kodiak (Alutiiq: , russian: Кадьяк), formerly Paul's Harbor, is the main city and one of seven communities on Kodiak Island in Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska. All commercial transportation between the island's communities and the outside world goes through this city via ferryboat or airline. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city is 5,581, down from 6,130 in 2010. It is the tenth-largest city in Alaska. Originally inhabited by Alutiiq natives for over 7,000 years, the city was settled in the 18th century by the subjects of the Russian crown and became the capital of Russian Alaska. Russian harvesting of the area's sea otter pelts led to the near extinction of the animal in the following century and led to wars with and enslavement of the natives for over 150 years. USCGC Roanoke Island
The USCGC ''Roanoke Island'' is the 46th Island class cutter to be commissioned. She was commissioned in Homer, Alaska, on February 7, 1992. Five other Island Class cutters are based in Alaska. Her primary missions include ''"search and rescue, fisheries enforcement and homeland security."'' In 2010 the ''Roanoke'' rescued a fishing vessel called ''Wahoo'', when it became disabled during bad weather near Pearl Island. On October 25, 2012, following a 135-day refit in a drydock in Ketchikan, ''Coast Guard Alaska'' explained the refit would allow the vessel to remain service until she was replaced by a new Sentinel class cutter. Nevertheless, the '' Homer News'' reported that the ''Roanoke'' would leave Homer by the end of June, 2015, for her decommissioning in Baltimore, Maryland.
