Perkins House (Newton, North Carolina)
Perkins House is a historic home located near Newton, Catawba County, North Carolina. It was built about 1790, and is a two-story, three bay Federal style brick dwelling. It features a hip-roof porch and a very wide, double shoulder chimney with flared headers. The interior woodwork was removed by the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Old Salem. Newton is a city in Catawba County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 12,968. It is the county seat of Catawba County. Newton is part of the Hickory–Lenoir– Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Newton was established in 1845 and incorporated in 1855. It was named for Isaac Newton Wilson, a state legislator who had introduced the bill creating Catawba County. Geography Newton is located at the center of Catawba County, at 35°39'54" North, 81°13'28" West (35.665082, −81.224351). It is bordered to the north by Conover and to the northwest by Hickory. Federal Architecture
Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815, which was heavily based on the works of Andrea Palladio with several innovations on Palladian architecture by Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries first for Jefferson's Monticello estate and followed by many examples in government building throughout the United States. Old Salem
Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem, North Carolina that was originally settled by the Moravian community in 1766. This small city features a living history museum (operated by the non-profit Old Salem Museums & Gardens, organized as Old Salem Inc.) that interprets the restored Moravian community. The non-profit organization began its work in 1950, although some private residents had restored buildings earlier. As the Old Salem Historic District, it was declared a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in 1966 and and expanded in 2016.
