Percy Gaum
Percy (Pinky) Gaum (October 19, 1915 – June 22, 1994) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Cape Breton Nova in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1956 to 1970. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party. Gaum was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, part of the Whitney Pier Jewish community which arose mainly from immigration from eastern European countries in the early 1900s. He was one of a number of descendants of those immigrants who rose to positions of prominence in a variety of professional and business fields. He was educated at the Sydney Academy and was a clothing merchant and real estate broker. He married Hannah Mandelbaum in 1948. He died in a hospital at Sydney in 1994. Gaum entered provincial politics in the 1956 election, winning the new riding of Cape Breton Nova. He was re-elected in the 1960, 1963, and 1967 elections. Sydney, Nova Scotia
Sydney is a former city and urban community on the east coast of Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, Canada within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Sydney was founded in 1785 by the British, was incorporated as a city in 1904, and dissolved on 1 August 1995, when it was amalgamated into the regional municipality. Sydney served as the Cape Breton Island's colonial capital, until 1820, when the colony merged with Nova Scotia and the capital moved to Halifax. A rapid population expansion occurred just after the turn of the 20th century, when Sydney became home to one of North America's main steel mills. Donald MacKeen Smith
Donald MacKeen Smith (November 26, 1923 – February 16, 1998) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral districts of Halifax Centre and Halifax Citadel in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1960 to 1970 as a member of the Progressive Conservatives. Biography Born in 1923 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Smith was educated at the University of King's College and Dalhousie University. He served with the 18th Armoured Car Regiment from 1944 to 1945. He married Helen Elizabeth Guildford in 1949. A business executive by career, Smith was president of J.E. Morse and Co. Ltd. Smith entered provincial politics in the 1960 election, defeating Liberal incumbent Gordon S. Cowan by 270 votes in the Halifax Centre riding. In December 1961, Smith was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia as Minister of Mines. He was re-elected in 1963, defeating Cowan by 1603 votes. Executive Council Of Nova Scotia
The Executive Council of Nova Scotia (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Nova Scotia) is the cabinet of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Almost always made up of members of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, the Cabinet is similar in structure and role to the Canadian Cabinet while being smaller in size with different portfolios. The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, as representative of the King in Right of Nova Scotia, heads the council, and is referred to as the Governor-in-Council. Other members of the Cabinet, who advise, or minister, the viceroy, are selected by the Premier of Nova Scotia and appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor. Most cabinet ministers are the head of a ministry, but this is not always the case. The Nova Scotia House of Assembly (french: Assemblée législative de la Nouvelle-Écosse; gd, Taigh Seanaidh Alba Nuadh), or Legislative Assembly, is the deliberative assembly of the General Assembly of Nova Scotia of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. The assembly is the oldest in Canada, having first sat in 1758, and in 1848 was the site of the first responsible government in the British Empire.
