Percy (1925 Film)
''Percy'' is a 1925 American silent comedy film directed by Roy William Neill and starring Charles Ray, Louise Dresser and Victor McLaglen. The film is based upon the novel ''The Desert Fiddler'' by William Henry Hamby. Plot As described in a film magazine review, Percy Rogeen, a mother’s boy, becomes his dad’s campaign manager and is taught to drink and smoke. In a fight he is thrown into a box car and eventually lands in the desert. He is saved from a gang by Holy Joe. Together they go to a gambling house and save the girl’s property from a gang plotting to get hold of it through holding back the water. Roy William Neill
Roy William Neill (4 September 1887 – 14 December 1946) was an Irish-born American film director best known for directing the last eleven of the fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, made between 1943 and 1946 and released by Universal Studios. Biography With his father as the captain, Roy William Neill was born on a ship off the coast of Ireland. His birth name was Roland de Gostrie. Neill began directing silent films in 1917 and went on to helm 111 films, 55 of them silent. Although most of Neill's films were low-budget B-movies, he was known for directing films with meticulously lit scenes with carefully layered shadows that would become the style of ''film noir'' in the late 1940s. Betty Blythe (born Elizabeth Blythe Slaughter; September 1, 1893 – April 7, 1972) was an American actress best known for her dramatic roles in exotic silent films such as ''The Queen of Sheba'' (1921). She appeared in 63 silent films and 56 talkies over the course of her career. Early life She was born Elizabeth Blythe Slaughter in Los Angeles, where she attended Westlake School for Girls, and the University of Southern California. Betty had already shortened her name to Betty Blythe when she and three other women posed for a photo shoot of the newest swim fashion for women, a bathing suit. Prior to then, women were expected to wear stockings with full dresses or skirts into the water. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." Toby Wing (born Martha Virginia Wing, July 14, 1915 – March 22, 2001), "Toby" being an old family nickname, was an American actress and showgirl, once called "the most beautiful chorus girl in Hollywood". Early years Wing was born in Amelia Court House, Virginia, to Paul Wing and Martha Thraves. Her father, a career reserve Army officer, was an assistant director for Paramount Pictures. He was reactivated for service prior to World War II and was captured by the Japanese and survived the Bataan Death March. She had a sister, Pat Wing (real name Gertrude), who also worked as an actress (often in the chorus), as well as a younger brother. Her great-uncle was English playwright Sir Arthur Wing Pinero. Richard Renchaw Neill Jr. (November 12, 1875 – April 8, 1970) was an American actor and screenwriter who worked in both the silent and sound eras.
