Percichthyidae
The members of the family Percichthyidae are known as the temperate perches. They belong to the order Perciformes, the perch-like fishes. The name Percichthyidae derives from the Latin ''perca'' for perch and Ancient Greek ἰχθύς, ''ichthys'' for fish. Classification The temperate perches are closely related to the temperate basses of the family Moronidae, and older literature treats the latter as belonging to the family Percichthyidae. Australian freshwater percichthyids were once placed in the marine grouper family, Serranidae, and the two families are thought to be closely related. Almost 40 species of percichthyids are now recognised, grouped in 11–12 genera. Most but not all are exclusively freshwater fishes. Bostockia
The nightfish (''Bostockia porosa'') is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish, a temperate perch from the family Percichthyidae which is endemic to southwestern Australia. Taxonomy The nightfish was first formally described in 1873 by the French naturalist François-Louis Laporte, comte de Castelnau. The type locality was given as the Cygnes River in the interior of Western Australia. Castelnau also described the new monotypic genus ''Bostockia'' for this new species. The is genus is classified within the family Percichthyidae, the temperate perches. The genus name honours the Anglican minister Rev. George James Bostock (1833-1881), a collector of fish specimens for Castelnau in Western Australia, he collected the nightfish type. The specific name ''porosus'' means “holed” or “pored”, an allusion to the pores around the head. Maccullochella
''Maccullochella'' is a genus of large Australian predatory freshwater fish within the family Percichthyidae. The genus ''Maccullochella'' was named after an early Australian fish researcher with the surname ''McCulloch''. The ''Maccullochella'' species are called 'cod' in the vernacular. Guyu (fish)
The Bloomfield River cod (''Guyu wujalwujalensis'') or the tropical nightfish, is a species of temperate perch endemic to Australia. It is only found in an 11-km stretch of the Bloomfield River (between two large waterfalls) in northern Queensland. These waterfalls appear to have blocked the migration of more aggressive tropical freshwater fish species such as the sooty grunter (''Hephaestus fuliginosus'') that have presumably naturally displaced the Bloomfield River cod from its former range in prehistoric times. With its very limited distribution, the Bloomfield River cod is clearly a relict species. It is a very important relict species, however, as it is the most northerly distributed percichthyid species in Australia, and raises interesting questions on the biogeography of percichthyid fish in Australia and the history of their ancient colonisation of Australian rivers. Sinipercidae
Sinipercidae, the Chinese perches or Oriental perches, is a family of freshwater ray-finned fishes , part of the superfamiy Percoidea, suborder Percoidei of the order Perciformes.They have been placed within the temperate perch family, Percichthyidae in the past but may be more closely allied to the Centrarchidae. Behaviour Based on genetic adaption, species of Sinipercidae fish have different growth, predatory feeding habit, aggression and pyloric caeca development. These fishes mostly eat live prey fishes because they have low Ectodysplasin A Receptor(EDAR) and very few gill rakers. In some species, larvae are cannibals at first feeding which leads to death of predator and prey. The Moronidae are a family of perciform fishes, commonly called the temperate basses, consisting of at least six freshwater, brackish water, and marine species.
