Per Steenberg
Peder Steenberg (March 17, 1870 – June 28, 1947) was a Norwegian organist and composer from Nedre Eiker, best known for his church music. Life and career Steenberg graduated from the Oslo Music Conservatory and also studied abroad in Leipzig, Berlin, and Copenhagen. In Norway, he served as the organist at Vålerenga Church (1902–1927) and at Saint Mark's Church (1927–1940). For several decades he taught vocal polyphony and counterpoint at the Oslo Conservatory of Music and at the teachers' college and school for the blind in Oslo. His compositions include religious cantatas and choral music, as well as organ music such as preludes, fugues, organ chorales, and similar. A stay in Denmark put him in touch with Thomas Laub, and Steenberg prepared an unauthorized hymnal that was published in 1947 as an innovative alternative to the official hymnal of 1926; it was based on Ludvig Mathias Lindeman's hymnal and was edited by music authorities including Eyvind Alnæs, Ole Mørk San ... Norwegians ( no, nordmenn) are a North Germanic ethnic group and nation native to Norway, where they form the vast majority of the population. Ole Mørk Sandvik
Ole Mørk Sandvik (9 May 1875 – 5 August 1976) was a Norwegian educator, musicologist and folk-song collector. Background Sandvik was born on the island of Helgøya in Hedmark, Norway. He was a son of school inspector Paul Knutsen Barstad Sandvik (1847–1936) and his wife Nikoline Petrine Mørk (1847–1927). His parents hailed from Ørsta and Volda. Three years later, his family moved to Hamar where he grew up. He graduated examen artium in 1893. He then began studying at the University of Kristiania. In 1897 he undertook theology studies. He graduated cand.theol. in 1902. He also graduated from the seminary at Hamar (''Hamar lærerskole'') in 1895. Olav Gurvin
Olav Gurvin (24 December 1893 Tysnes – 31 October 1974) was a Norwegian musicologist, a professor at the University of Oslo from 1957. He co-edited the first Norwegian music encyclopedia in 1949, and edited the magazine ''Norsk Musikkliv'' from 1942 to 1951. Personal life Gurvin was born in Tysnes as the son of teacher Elling Olson Gurvin and Kristina Olsdatter Flugem. He married Dagny Siqveland in 1947. Career Gurvin studied musicology at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin, and graduated from the University of Oslo in 1928. Between 1930 and 1947 he was a conductor for various choirs in Oslo. Arild Sandvold
Arild Edvin Sandvold (June 2, 1895 – August 12, 1984) was a Norwegian organist, composer, and choir conductor. Sandvold spent most of his career as the cathedral organist and cantor at Oslo Cathedral and as an organ teacher at the Oslo Conservatory of Music, now the Norwegian Academy of Music, for more than 50 years. Sandvold was the director of the St. Cecilia Society choir ( no, Cæciliaforeningen) from 1928 to 1957. Sandvold studied for several years in Oslo under Hilmar Grønner and Gustav Fredrik Lange, among others, before he traveled to Leipzig, where he studied organ playing under Karl Straube. In Leipzig Sandvold, heard Max Reger's organ music and this had a major influence on him. This influence is most clearly reflected in his major organ work ''Introduction and Passacaglia in B Minor''. Eyvind Alnæs
Eyvind Alnæs (29 April 1872 – 24 December 1932) was a Norwegian composer, pianist, organist and choir director. Personal life Alnæs was born in Fredrikstad, as the son of headmaster Johannes Jørgen Lauritz Alnæs (1835–1916) and Elise Martine Hansen (1851–1931). He married Emilie Thorne (1882–1976) in 1903. He was the father of author Lise Børsum, and grandfather of novelist Finn Alnæs and artist Bente Børsum. Career In 1888 he was enrolled at the Music and Organist School in Oslo (''Musikkonservatoriet i Oslo''). Alnæs studied piano with Westye Waaler, organ with Peter Brynie Lindeman as well as harmony, counterpoint and composition with Iver Holter.
