People's Power Party (Singapore)
The People's Power Party (abbreviation: PPP) is an opposition political party in Singapore. History and political development The party was first formed by veteran politician Goh Meng Seng, on 16 July 2015, just a few months prior to the election held that year. Goh had previously served as a member of the incumbent opposition Workers' Party of Singapore and National Solidarity Party, in the 2006 and 2011, respectively. In the aftermath of the 2011 election, Goh resigned from his Secretary General post as well as his party membership following the party's defeat. The party was perceived as lightweight and opposed to major opposition parties were believed to be reasons for its speedy registration approval being given in two instead of the typical three months set by the Election Department. Tin Pei Ling ( zh, s=陈佩玲, p=Chén Pèilíng; born 23 December 1983) is a Singaporean politician and businesswoman. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing MacPherson SMC since 2015 and previously the MacPherson division of Marine Parade GRC between 2011 and 2015. MacPherson SMC
The MacPherson Single Member Constituency is a single member constituency located in the central area of Singapore. The current Member of Parliament for the constituency is Tin Pei Ling of the People's Action Party (PAP). History It existed from 1968 to 1991 as an independent ward, was merged with Marine Parade GRC until 2011, and became an independent SMC again for the 2015 general elections. 2020 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on Friday, 10 July 2020 to elect 93 members to the Parliament of Singapore across 31 constituencies. Parliament was dissolved and the general election called by President Halimah Yacob on 23 June, on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. It elected members of parliament to the 14th Parliament of Singapore since Singapore's independence in 1965, using the first-past-the-post electoral system. Voting was mandatory for all Singaporeans who were aged 21 or above as of 1 March 2020. This election was the 18th general election in Singapore and the 13th since independence. Tan Cheng Bock
Adrian Tan Cheng Bock ( zh, s=陈清木, p=Chén Qīngmù; born 26 April 1940) is a Singaporean politician and medical practitioner. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayer Rajah SMC between 1980 and 2001. He served as Secretary-General of Progress Singapore Party (PSP) between 2019 to 2021 and served as Progress Singapore Party (PSP) Chairman since 2021. Early life Tan was born on 26 April 1940 in Singapore. He came from a Hokkien-speaking family. Tan attended Radin Mas Primary School and Raffles Institution (RI). At RI, he was once the classmate of the future Prime Minister and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Singaporeans First (SingFirst) was a political party in Singapore founded on 25 May 2014 but was dissolved on 25 June 2020. History and political development Formation and contests In 2011, Tan Jee Say, a former civil servant, was known for his contests in both the general and presidential elections held that year, despite being endorsed by the opposition parties while defeated on both occasions. The Singapore Democratic Party (abbreviation: SDP) is a politcal party in Singapore. The party was founded on 6 August 1980 by Chiam See Tong. During the 1991 general election, Ling How Doong and Cheo Chai Chen won Bukit Gombak SMC and Nee Soon SMC respectively, giving the party a total of three seats in Parliament. When Chiam fell out with the party's Central Executive Committee in 1993 and subsequently left the party in 1996 for the splinter Singapore People's Party (SPP), the party became destabilised. Chiam was succeeded by Chee Soon Juan, who has remained as Secretary-General ever since. The Democratic Progressive Party ( abbreviation: DPP) is a political party in Singapore. History and political development From a splinter group from the Workers' Party, the party was founded by the former party's Assistant Secretary-General Seow Khee Leng on 16 March 1973, under the name of United Front. On 5 March 1982, the party was renamed to Singapore United Front, to avoid confusion with the name of another party, United People's Front. During the campaigning in the 1984 general election, SUF's chief Seow was sued by Lee Kuan Yew (who was then the Prime Minister of Singapore) alongside the members of People's Action Party for slandering defamatory remarks made at two rally speeches that Lee and his cabinet were guilty of corruption.
