People's Party (Faroe Islands)
The Faroese People's Party – Radical Self-Government ( fo, Hin føroyski fólkaflokkurin – radikalt sjálvstýri) is a pro- Faroese independence conservative and conservative-liberal political party on the Faroe Islands led by Beinir Johannesen. One of the four major parties, it has had eight seats in the Løgting since the 2019 election, making it the joint-largest party, but it has neither of the Faroes' seats in the Folketing. Founded in 1939 as a split from the Self-Government Party and by former members of the Business Party (Vinnuflokkurin), the party has traditionally supported greater autonomy for the Faroe Islands. Party leader Hákun Djurhuus served as Prime Minister from 1963 to 1967, as did Jógvan Sundstein from 1989 to 1991. The Faroe Islands have a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. There are two major ideological cleavages in Faroese politics. In addition to the left-right spectrum, parties are also divided between those that want to maintain the Faroes' place within the Danish Realm ('unionists') and those that want Faroese independence ('separatists'). Centre Party (Faroe Islands)
The Centre Party ( fo, Miðflokkurin) is a Christian democratic, conservative political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Jenis av Rana. The party is known for its social conservatism, particularly its stance on LGBT rights. At the 2008 Faroese general election, the party won 8.4% of the popular vote and 3 out of 33 seats. The Social Democratic Party ( fo, Javnaðarflokkurin, lit=Equality Party, JF) is a social-democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. At the 2004 general election on 20 January 2004, the party received 21.8% of the popular vote and therefore won 7 out of 33 seats in the Løgting. Anfinn Kallsberg (born 19 November 1947) is a Faroese politician, former prime minister, and the former leader of the People's Party ( fo, italic=yes, Fólkaflokkurin). First elected to the Faroese parliament in 1980 and consecutively since then, Kallsberg served as Fisheries Minister from 1983 to 1985 and for 5 months in Jógvan Sundstein's first coalition government in 1989, and as Economics and Finance Minister from 1996 to 1998 in a coalition led by Edmund Joensen ( Union Party). Jógvan Sundstein
Jógvan Sundstein (born 25 May 1933) is a Faroese politician and member of the Faroese People's Party. Jógvan is the son of Johanna Malena (born Jensen) and Hans Jacob Matras Sundstein from Tórshavn. He is married to Lydia (born Marsten) from Klaksvík. Jógvan Sundstein is a certified accountant and was a member of numerous boards of directors. In 1979 he was elected to the Løgting for the first time. He was the speaker of the Løgting from 1980 to 1984 and 1988 to 1989. He was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands (Løgmaður) from 1989 to 1991 and was a minister from 1991 to 1993. In 2008 Sundstein published his memoirs, becoming the first Faroese politician to do so.
