Pentti Nikula
Pentti Kustaa Nikula (born 3 February 1939) is a retired Finnish pole vaulter. He won the 1962 European Championships and held one world and four European outdoor records. He placed seventh at the 1964 Summer Olympics. Somero () is a town and municipality of Finland. It is part of the Southwest Finland region in the province of Western Finland, located northeast of Salo, east of Turku and northwest of Helsinki. Brian Sternberg
Brian Sternberg (June 21, 1943 – May 23, 2013) was a world record holder in the men's pole vault who was paralyzed from the neck down after a trampoline accident in 1963. Sternberg set one of his world records on May 25, 1963, in Modesto, California jumping using new technology for the sport, a fiberglass pole. @ 1:44. His final record of was set on June 7, 1963. After graduation from Seattle's Shoreline High School in 1961, Sternberg enrolled at the University of Washington and won the 1963 NCAA pole vault title and also shattered the world record in the event twice. Five weeks after his Modesto jump, Sternberg was training in Hec Edmundson Pavilion in preparation for a trip to Russia. While performing a double somersault with a half twist, he landed awkwardly on his neck in the middle of the trampoline where a spotter could not help. World Record Progression Pole Vault Men
The first world record in the men's pole vault was recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations in 1912. As of June 21, 2009, 71 world records have been ratified by the IAAF (now World Athletics) in the event. Since 2000, World Athletics makes no distinction between indoor and outdoor settings when establishing pole vault world records. This new rule was not applied retroactively. The introduction in the early 1950s of flexible vaulting poles made from composites such as fiberglass or carbon fiber allowed vaulters to achieve greater height. Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women. It is typically classified as one of the four major jumping events in athletics, alongside the high jump, long jump and triple jump. It is unusual among track and field sports in that it requires a significant amount of specialised equipment in order to participate, even at a basic level.
