Pensacola Fliers
The Pensacola Fliers were a Minor League Baseball team, based in Pensacola, Florida, United States, that operated in the Southeastern League between 1928 and 1950. They won 3 league championships, in 1939, 1949 and 1950. The team originated as the Pensacola Flyers in 1928 and operated through 1930. After a brief hiatus, they reformed as the Pensacola Pilots which lasted through World War II. After the war they returned as the Fliers. They had affiliation agreements with the Brooklyn Dodgers (1938), Philadelphia Phillies (1939–1940), Washington Senators (1946) and Atlanta Crackers (1949–1950). The 1949 Fliers were recognized as one of the 100 greatest minor league teams of all time. Eastern Indoor Soccer League
The Eastern Indoor Soccer League (EISL) was an American professional regional indoor soccer league. The league featured teams from the Southeastern United States. The regular seasons were played from May to August with post-season play in September. The EISL lasted two seasons before folding. 1997 season Huntsville began the season as the Daytona Beach Speed Kings. William Arthur Herring (September 24, 1911 – September 29, 1996) was an American minor league baseball pitcher, player-manager and general manager. Early life Herring was born in Seven Springs, North Carolina in September 1911 and graduated with a law degree from Wake Forest but decided to pursue a baseball career. He debuted in 1935 with the Portsmouth Truckers of the Piedmont League. He played three seasons in Portsmouth, going 29-29 on the mound and posting a .281 batting average at the plate in 1937. Career The next two seasons were spent in the Coastal Plain League. 1938 saw Herring in Ayden, and in 1939, he pitched for Kinston. In Kinston, Herring was called on to take over as player-manager for Snake Henry, who had been suspended for a year after an ugly on-field altercation with an umpire. Otto George Denning (December 28, 1912 – May 25, 1992) was an American professional baseball player and manager. His 20-year (1932–51) career was confined to minor league baseball except for 129 games at the Major League level during the World War II manpower shortage for the 1942–43 Cleveland Indians. He was a native of Hays, Kansas, and attended high school in Chicago, Illinois. Nicknamed "Dutch," Denning was a , catcher and first baseman who threw and batted right-handed. He began his pro baseball career in 1932 with the Davenport Blue Sox in the Class D Mississippi Valley League. In 1938, he joined the Minneapolis Millers of the top-level American Association and finished second to teammate Ted Williams in the league's batting race.
