Penny LaRocque
Penny LaRocque (born ca. 1943 in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian retired curler from Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a former Canadian champion skip, and world championship bronze medallist. She retired from curling in 2007. Career LaRocque has won five provincial women's championships, five provincial mixed titles, and seven provincial seniors titles. Her first provincial title came in 1974, playing second for the Joyce Myers rink, and went 2-7 at the 1974 Macdonald Lassies Championship.. Her second title came in 1978, where she skipped the Nova Scotia rink to a 2nd place finish at the 1978 Macdonald Lassies Championship. She also won the 1979 and 1983 provincial titles as skip, and the 1986 title, playing third for Colleen Jones. LaRocque won her only national title at the 1983 Scott Tournament of Hearts. Curling
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules, and shuffleboard. Two teams, each with four players, take turns sliding heavy, polished granite stones, also called ''rocks'', across the ice ''curling sheet'' toward the ''house'', a circular target marked on the ice. Each team has eight stones, with each player throwing two. The purpose is to accumulate the highest score for a ''game''; points are scored for the stones resting closest to the centre of the house at the conclusion of each ''end'', which is completed when both teams have thrown all of their stones once. A game usually consists of eight or ten ends. The player can induce a curved path, described as ''curl'', by causing the stone to slowly rotate as it slides. Joel Matheson
Joel Rand Matheson (born February 18, 1930) is a former lawyer, business owner and political figure in Nova Scotia. He represented Halifax Bedford Basin in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1978 to 1993 as a Progressive Conservative. Early life and education He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the son of Rand Matheson, and was educated in Moncton, New Brunswick, at St. Francis Xavier University and finally graduating with an LL.B. from Dalhousie University in 1954. Political career Matheson served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Finance, Minister of Mines and Energy, Minister of Health and Attorney General. He was defeated by Gerry Fogarty when he ran for reelection in 1993. Halifax Bedford Basin
Clayton Park West is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. The riding was created in 1978 as Halifax Bedford Basin from a portion of Halifax Cobequid. In 2003, the district lost a northern area to Bedford and was renamed Halifax Clayton Park. Following the 2012 electoral boundary review, the district was renamed Clayton Park West. It gained Birch Cove and Kearney Lake areas from Bedford-Birch Cove and the Kearney Lake area from Hammonds Plains-Upper Sackville. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Sue Anne Bartlett
Sylvia "Sue" Anne Bartlett (born 1942) is a Canadian curler, originally from Labrador City. A member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame, she is a 12-time Newfoundland provincial women's champion, and two-time runner up at the Canadian women's curling championship. Born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, Bartlett moved to Labrador City in 1963 and began curling in 1964. Career Women's Bartlett and her rink of Ann Bright, Francis Hiscock and Mavis Pike won their first provincial women's championship in 1971, earning the team the right to represent Newfoundland at the 1971 Canadian Ladies Curling Association Championship in their home province. The 2007 Canadian Senior Curling Championships were held March 18-25 at the Colisée de Trois-Rivières in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. Alberta won both the men's and women's events. In the men's final, Edmonton's Pat Ryan rink defeated Ontario's Bob Turcotte, while on the women's side, Lethbridge's Diane Foster team beat British Columbia's Kathy Smiley.
