Pennard (previously Llanarthbodu) is a village and community on the south of the Gower Peninsula, about 7 miles south-west of Swansea city centre. It falls within the Pennard electoral ward of Swansea. The Pennard community includes the larger settlements of Southgate and Kittle. the population as of 2011 was 2,688. Description and amenities The village has a church, health centre, library and a primary school. There is also an 18-hole golf course, as well as the remains of a 12th-century castle. Pennard Castle To the west of Pennard village, overlooking the valley of Pennard Pill, is the 12th-century ruins of Pennard Castle. The castle was abandoned in the 14th-century due to encroachment from the sand dunes. It was described as "desolate and ruinous" by 1650 and today only the gatehouse and some of the curtain wall remain. Pennard is the name of an electoral ward in the City and County of Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom. It is coterminous with the community of Pennard. The electoral ward consists of some or all of the following places: Bishopston, Fairwood Common, Kittle, Parkmill, Pennard and Southgate in the parliamentary constituency of Gower. Part of Three Cliffs Bay falls within the ward. Pennard is bounded by the wards of Gower to the west; Fairwood to the north and Bishopston to the east. Southgate is a village in the community of Pennard on the Gower Peninsula, Swansea, Wales. It is also a community electoral ward for Pennard Community Council. The population in 2011 was 2,004., making up most of the population of the community. Description The village is located between Pennard Golf Course and the cliffs of the Gower coast. The village comprises largely of modern twentieth and twenty-first century housing, but includes a variety of shops, a post office, a social club (The Southgate) and Pennard Golf Club at the northern end. Southgate has some of the most expensive housing in the area, with average house prices in the village of £366,000 in 2018. In July 2017 a bungalow sold for £735,000 and another for £660,000, two of the three most expensive properties sold in the county in that month. Vernon Watkins
Vernon Phillips Watkins (27 June 1906 – 8 October 1967) was a Welsh poet and translator. His headmaster at Repton was Geoffrey Fisher, who became Archbishop of Canterbury. Despite his parents being Nonconformists, Watkins' school experiences influenced him to join the Church of England. He read modern languages at Cambridge, but left before completing his degree. Career Dylan Thomas and the Swansea Group He met Dylan Thomas, who was to be a close friend, in 1935 when Watkins had returned to a job in a bank in Swansea. About once a week Thomas would come to Vernon's parents' house, situated on the very top of the cliffs of the Gower peninsula. Vernon was the only person from whom Thomas took advice when writing poetry and he was invariably the first to read his finished work. They remained lifelong friends, despite Thomas's failure, in the capacity of best man, to turn up to the wedding of Vernon and Gwen in 1944. Tom Doak
Tom Doak is a golf course architect. He has 6 courses ranked among the top 100 in the world according to the "Top 100 Courses in the World" March 2021 list compiled by ''Golf Magazine.'' These include Pacific Dunes in Oregon, Ballyneal in Colorado, Barnbougle Dunes in Tasmania and Cape Kidnappers in New Zealand. Doak lives in Michigan. He was a student of golf course designer Pete Dye, although perhaps his greatest influence comes from Alister MacKenzie (whom Doak wrote a book about), designer of Cypress Point, Royal Melbourne, and consultant to Bobby Jones at Augusta National. In 2007, Doak restored Alister MacKenzie's home course, Pasatiempo, a ''Golf Magazine'' Top 100 course located in Santa Cruz, California. Gower ( cy, Gŵyr) is a constituency created in 1885 and represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by one Member of Parliament (MP). Nigel Jenkins
Nigel Jenkins (20 July 1949 – 28 January 2014) was an Anglo-Welsh poet. He was an editor, journalist, psychogeographer, broadcaster and writer of creative non-fiction, as well as being a lecturer at Swansea University and director of the creative writing programme there. Early life Jenkins was born on 20 July 1949 in Gorseinon, Wales, and was brought up on a farm on the former Kilvrough estate on the Gower Peninsula, near Swansea. He was educated at the University of Essex. Career Jenkins first came to prominence as one of the Welsh Arts Council's ''Three Young Anglo-Welsh Poets'' (the title of a 1974 collection featuring Jenkins, Tony Curtis and Duncan Bush – all winners of the Council's Young Poets Prize). In 1976, he was given an Eric Gregory Award by the Society of Authors. Harri Webb
Harri Webb (7 September 1920 – 31 December 1994) was a Welsh poet, Welsh nationalist, journalist and librarian. Early life Harri Webb was born on 7 September 1920 in Swansea, at 45 Tŷ Coch Road in Sketty, but before he was two the family moved to Catherine Street, nearer the city centre. University Webb grew up in a working class environment. In 1938 he won a Local Education Authority scholarship, and went to the University of Oxford to study languages, specialising in French, Spanish and Portuguese – a period of his life to which he made virtually no reference in his writings. While he was at university his studies were affected by the death of his mother; he graduated with a third class degree in 1941.
