Penn Mile Stakes
The Penn Mile Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years old, held over a distance of one mile on the turf annually in late May or early June at Penn National Race Course, Grantville, Pennsylvania. The event currently carries a purse of $400,000. History With the influx of additional funds from the Penn National Race Course turning itself to a Racino the club ventured in adding higher stakes races. The race was inaugurated in 2013 with a stakes purse of $500,000. In 2015 the event was classified as Grade III and in 2017 was upgraded to Grade II. The event in 2020 was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States with Penn National closed when the event was to be scheduled. Due to weather conditions and the state of the track the 2021 running was moved to the dirt and the event was downgraded to Grade III. Penn National Race Course
Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is a thoroughbred horse racing track and casino in Grantville, Pennsylvania, east of Harrisburg. It is owned by Gaming and Leisure Properties and operated by Penn Entertainment. The track opened on August 30, 1972. It consists of a dirt course and a 7-furlong turf course. It is unusual among United States thoroughbred tracks in offering racing 52 weeks a year. It features the $200,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup Handicap for horses three-years-old and up run 5 furlongs on the turf. In 2009 Cardashi, ridden by jockey David Cora, won in a 29–1 upset. This track is home to Eclipse Special Award winner Rapid Redux and his trainer David J. Wells. In 2013 the inaugural Penn Mile on turf was run. Kenneth L. "Ken" Ramsey (born 1935) and Sarah Kathern "Kitten" Ramsey (February 5, 1939 – May 29, 2022) are horse breeders and owners of Thoroughbred race horses. They have multiple graded stakes winners, three Breeders' Cup winners, and the Ramseys themselves have won multiple Eclipse Awards for outstanding owner and breeder. Javier Castellano (born October 23, 1977, in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela) is a jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. Castellano began his riding career in 1996 at Santa Rita and La Rinconada racecourses in Venezuela.
