''Penitentiary III'' is a 1987 American crime drama film written and directed by Jamaa Fanaka. It is the sequel to the 1982 film ''Penitentiary II''. The film stars Leon Isaac Kennedy, Anthony Geary, Steve Antin, Ric Mancini, Marie Burrell Fanaka and Raymond Kessler. The film was released on September 4, 1987, by Cannon Film Distributors. A man is framed for murder and sent to prison. He is beaten and tortured, then forced to fight the prison's worst killer, a martial-arts fighting midget called Thud. Jamaa Fanaka
Jamaa Fanaka (born Walter Gordon; September 6, 1942 – April 1, 2012) was an American filmmaker. He is best known for his 1979 film, ''Penitentiary'', and was one of the leading directors of the L.A. Rebellion film movement. Early life and education Fanaka was born Walter Gordon to Robert L. and Beatrice Gordon in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1971, Fanaka was accepted into the film school at UCLA. His first film, ''A Day in the Life of Willie Faust, or Death on the Installment Plan'', was a morality tale shot in 8mm film about a heroin addict. The film stars Fanaka (credited as Walt Gordon) in the title role. It is the only narrative short he ever made. Jan-Christopher Horak of the UCLA Film Archives, when comparing the movie with the 1972 blaxploitation film, '' Super Fly'', released the same year, observed, "unlike Priest's elegant cocaine consumption in ''Super Fly'', Willie's arm gushes blood as he injects heroin." Rick Zumwalt
Richard Lee Zumwalt Jr. (September 24, 1951 – March 19, 2003) was an American professional arm-wrestler and actor. He is known for playing the character of Bob "Bull" Hurley in the 1987 Sylvester Stallone movie ''Over the Top''. Danny Trejo ( ; born May 16, 1944) is an American actor. He has appeared in films including ''Desperado'', ''Heat'', and the ''From Dusk Till Dawn'' film series. Raye Hollitt (born April 17, 1964) is an American actress and bodybuilder, also known by her stage name Zap, one of the original cast members of '' American Gladiators''. Biography Hollitt graduated from Lake-Lehman High School in 1982, then worked as a paralegal for seven years.
