Penitentiary II
''Penitentiary II'' is a 1982 American Blaxploitation drama film directed by Jamaa Fanaka. Released on April 2, 1982, the film is the sequel to 1979's ''Penitentiary''. It was followed by another sequel, ''Penitentiary III'', which was released in August 1987. Plot Martel "Too Sweet" Gordone earned his parole from jail by winning a prison boxing tournament. All Too Sweet wants to do is start a peaceful life, but a condition of his release is that he work for a boxing promoter. Too Sweet has no interest in boxing and wants to live with his sister and her husband who support his desire to start over. However, when an old enemy from prison, Half Dead, escapes and kills his girlfriend, Too Sweet changes his plans and returns to the ring. Jamaa Fanaka
Jamaa Fanaka (born Walter Gordon; September 6, 1942 – April 1, 2012) was an American filmmaker. He is best known for his 1979 film, ''Penitentiary'', and was one of the leading directors of the L.A. Rebellion film movement. Early life and education Fanaka was born Walter Gordon to Robert L. and Beatrice Gordon in Jackson, Mississippi. In 1971, Fanaka was accepted into the film school at UCLA. His first film, ''A Day in the Life of Willie Faust, or Death on the Installment Plan'', was a morality tale shot in 8mm film about a heroin addict. The film stars Fanaka (credited as Walt Gordon) in the title role. It is the only narrative short he ever made. Jan-Christopher Horak of the UCLA Film Archives, when comparing the movie with the 1972 blaxploitation film, '' Super Fly'', released the same year, observed, "unlike Priest's elegant cocaine consumption in ''Super Fly'', Willie's arm gushes blood as he injects heroin." Hawthorne James is an American character actor and director, known for his role as Big Red Davis in the 1991 film ''The Five Heartbeats''. He is also known for his role as Sam, the injured bus driver, in ''Speed'' and for films and television series such as '' Seven'', '' NYPD Blue'' and guest-starring on ''Frasier'' as Bill in the season one episode "Miracle on Third or Fourth Street". He was born James Hawthorne in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Robert Hawthorne and A. M. Alene. He earned a bachelor's degree in Theater from the University of Notre Dame, a master's degree from the University of Michigan, and taught Theater at Illinois State University. Blaxploitation Films
Blaxploitation is an ethnic subgenre of the exploitation film that emerged in the United States during the early 1970s. The term, a portmanteau of the words "black" and "exploitation", was coined in August 1972 by Junius Griffin, the president of the Beverly Hills-Hollywood NAACP branch. He claimed the genre was "proliferating offenses" to the black community in its perpetuation of stereotypical characters often involved in crime. The genre does rank among the first after the race films in the 1940s and 1960s in which black characters and communities are the protagonists and subjects of film and television, rather than sidekicks, antagonists or victims of brutality. The genre's inception coincides with the rethinking of race relations in the 1970s.
