Penelope (genus)
''Penelope'' is a bird genus in the family Cracidae consisting of a number of large turkey-like arboreal species, the typical guans. The range of these species is in forests from southern Mexico to tropical South America. These large birds have predominantly brown plumage and have relatively small heads when compared to the size of their bodies; they also bear a characteristic dewlap. Body lengths are typically 65 to 95 centimeters. Most of the genus members have a typically raucous honking call. A number of the genus members are endangered species and at least one is critically endangered, usually due to tropical deforestation and hunting. In the case of several species the estimated populations are as low as a few 1000 mature birds, spread over a considerable area. Because of the scarcity of many of the genus members and also due to the habitat being often in deep or high altitude forests, little is known about some of the species habits and reproduction; in fact, some s ...

Aburria
The wattled guan (''Aburria aburri'') is a species of bird in the family Cracidae. It is a fairly large black cracid with blue-based, black-tipped beak and a long, red-and-yellow wattle. It is found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest and subtropical or tropical moist montane forest. The wattled guan is a fairly shy species that is mostly seen when it perches on the outer edge of the canopy from a distance. Like many tropical forest birds, it is heard more often than seen. It is threatened by habitat destruction and the IUCN has assessed its conservation status as being "near threatened". Description The wattled guan is recognisable by the elongated red and yellow fleshy wattle that dangles from its throat. It is a large bird with a long tail, about long and weighing between . The plumage is black, the beak is blue and the feet are flesh-coloured. Distribution and habitat The wattled guan is endemic ...

The red-faced guan (''Penelope dabbenei'') is a species of bird in the family Cracidae, the chachalacas, guans, and curassows. It is found in Argentina and Bolivia. Taxonomy and systematics At least one author has suggested that the red-faced guan should be treated as a subspecies of the Andean guan (''Penelope montagnii'') and others have suggested a close relationship between it and the dusky-legged guan (''P. obscura'') but later work refuted both treatments.Remsen, J. Yungas Guan
The Yungas guan (''Penelope bridgesi'') is a species of bird in the family Cracidae, the chachalacas, guans, and curassows. It is found in the Andean foothills of Argentina and Bolivia. Taxonomy and systematics Prior to late 2020, the Yungas guan was considered a subspecies of dusky-legged guan (''Penelope obscura''). A 2018 publication detailed many morphological differences between them. An earlier publication had highlighted their very different vocalizations.del Hoyo, J. & Motis, A. (2004) Update Chapter. Pp. 322-476 in: Delacour, J & Amadon, J. 2004 Curassows and Related Birds. Second Edition. Lynx Edicions and NMNH, Barcelona & New York. Based on that evidence and the members' personal knowledge, the South American Classification Committee of the American Ornithological Society elevated it to species rank in December 2020, and the International Ornithological Congress followed suit in January 2021.Remsen, J. Band-tailed Guan
The band-tailed guan (''Penelope argyrotis'') is a species of bird in the family Cracidae, the chachalacas, guans, and curassows. It is found in Colombia and Venezuela. Taxonomy and systematics The band-tailed guan is closely related to bearded guan (''Penelope barbata'') and they at times have been considered conspecific. The band-tailed guan has three subspecies, the nominate ''P. a. argyrotis'', ''P. a. albicauda'', and ''P. a. colombiana''. The last of these has sometimes been treated as a separate species, and two other subspecies split from ''albicauda'' and ''colombiana'' have been proposed, but these treatments have not gained support.del Hoyo, J. and G. History The white-winged guan was originally known from three specimens collected in 1876 and 1877. It was not positively seen again until 1977, though there had been hints of its continued existence in 1969. Penelope Albipennis1
Penelope ( ; Ancient Greek: Πηνελόπεια, ''Pēnelópeia'', or el, Πηνελόπη, ''Pēnelópē'') is a character in Homer's ''Odyssey.'' She was the queen of Ithaca and was the daughter of Spartan king Icarius and naiad Periboea. Penelope is known for her fidelity to her husband Odysseus, despite the attention of more than a hundred suitors during his absence. In one source, Penelope's original name was Arnacia or Arnaea. Etymology Glossed by Hesychius as "some kind of bird" (today arbitrarily identified with the Eurasian wigeon, to which Linnaeus gave the binomial ''Anas penelope''), where () is a common Pre-Greek suffix for predatory animals; however, the semantic relation between the proper name and the gloss is not clear. In folk etymology, () is usually understood to combine the Greek word (), "weft", and (), "face", which is considered the most appropriate for a cunning weaver whose motivation is hard to decipher. Robert S. P. Beekes believed the name ...
