The Pembina River is a tributary of the Athabasca River in central Alberta, Canada. "Pembina" is a Canadian French name for the high bush cranberry ''(Viburnum trilobum)''. The river gives the name to the Pembina oil field, an oil- and gas-producing region centered on Drayton Valley. The environmentalist group Pembina Institute also took its name from the river. It drains an area (about 8500 square kilometers) of the prairie country along the Canada–US border, threading the Manitoba-North Dakota border eastward to the Red River. Via the Red River, Lake Winnipeg and the Nelson River, it is part of the watershed of Hudson Bay. It rises in several streams on the eastern side of the Turtle Mountains on both sides of the international border.
