Faro Point (Italian ''Punta del Faro'') is the northeastern promontory of Sicily situated in Messina district at northeast of the city. The village is connected to the city center by two ATM bus lines: line 32 (Ponte Gallo - Mortelle - Terminal Museo) and shuttle line 1 ( Giampilieri sup. - Torre Faro). Historical significance As the ancient Pelorus, Punta del Faro is one of the most celebrated promontories of Sicily, forming the northeastern extremity of the whole island, and one of the three promontories which were considered to give to it the triangular form from which it derived the name of "Trinacria". It was at the same time the point which projected farthest towards the opposite coast of Italy; so that the narrowest part of the Sicilian straits was that which lay between Cape Pelorus and the coast adjoining the headland of Caenys (It. Pelorus Island
Pelorus Island, also known as North Palm Island, is the northernmost island of the Great Palm Island group. It is located north of Orpheus Island, and covers an area of about . Prior to the arrival of Europeans, Orpheus Island was inhabited by an Aboriginal people, probably the Nyawigi people. It was known as Yanooa and Guyroogarrie in one or more Aboriginal languages (possibly Nyawaygi?). The island was named after HMS ''Pelorus'', flagship on the Australia Station 1860-62. In 2017 the Morris family bought Pelorus Island, who own the Northern Escape Collection; Chris Morris being the Computershare mogul. On behalf of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Multiplex designed and constructed a navigation structure and helipad to service the structure. Pelorus Islet (also known as Pelorus Reef and Pelorus Rock) is an islet in the Australian state of South Australia located in Great Australian Bight off the south coast of Kangaroo Island approximately east south-east of Cape Gantheaume. It was named by Captain Francis Harding, RN after HMS ''Pelorus''. Description Pelorus Islet is about east south-east of Cape Gantheaume. It consists of three separate islets - a main round topped peak of height with a reef with several rocks sitting above water level to its east and another exposed rock to its south-west. It is inaccessible by boat as it is subject to continuous swells. Te Hoiere / Pelorus River is a river at the northern end of South Island of New Zealand in the region of Marlborough. It flows from the Richmond Range into Pelorus Sound / Te Hoiere. This area is fantastic for camping and is renowned for its magnificent river swimming where the Pelorus River runs through a gorge at Pelorus Bridge. At Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve, the river was used as a film locations for the barrel rider scene in '' The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'', which increased the area's popularity for river rafting. Pelorus Sound / Te Hoiere is the largest of the Sound (geography), sounds which make up the Marlborough Sounds at the north of the South Island, New Zealand. The Marlborough Sounds is a system of drowned river valleys, which were formed after the last ice age around 10,000 years ago. Pelorus Sound has a main channel which winds south from Cook Strait for about , between steeply sloped wooded hills, until it reached its head close to Havelock, New Zealand, Havelock town. Pelorus has several major arms, notably Tennyson Inlet, Tawhitinui Reach, Kenepuru Sound and the Crail/Clova/Beatrix Bay complex. Its shoreline runs for . Artoces was a king of Iberia (modern-day Georgia) from 78 to 63 BC. He features in the Classical accounts of the Third Mithridatic War (Appian, ''Bell. In marine navigation, a pelorus is a reference tool for maintaining bearing of a vessel at sea. It is a "simplified compass" without a directive element, suitably mounted and provided with vanes to permit observation of relative bearings. The instrument was named for one Pelorus, said to have been the pilot for Hannibal, circa 203 BC. Ancient use Harold Gatty described the use of a pelorus by Polynesians before the use of a compass. Pelorus Jack
Pelorus Jack ( fl. 1888 – April 1912) was a Risso's dolphin (''Grampus griseus'') that was famous for meeting and escorting ships through a stretch of water in Cook Strait, New Zealand. The animal was reported over a 24 year period, from 1888 until his disappearance after 1912. Pelorus Jack was usually spotted in Admiralty Bay between Cape Francis and Collinet Point, near French Pass, a notoriously dangerous channel used by ships travelling between Wellington and Nelson. How he got his name is uncertain. It is recorded in the book ''Breverton's nautical curiosities : a book of the sea'' that he was named after the pelorus, a marine navigational instrument. However, ''Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand'', says the name came from Pelorus Sound / Te Hoiere because it was at the entrance to that stretch of water where he would regularly meet ships to accompany them.
