Pell Center For International Relations And Public Policy
The Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University is a research center devoted to the exploration and study of politics, international relations, public policies and ideas. Dedicated to the legacy of the late Sen. Claiborne Pell, a Newport, Rhode Island resident during his 36 years in the U.S. Senate, the center promotes American engagement in the world, effective government at home, and civic participation by all Americans. The Pell Center is home to the Story in the Public Square initiative. Story in the Public Square Since 2013 (with the exception of the pandemic year of 2020), the Center has annually awarded the Pell Center Prize for Story in the Public Square. Salve Regina University
Salve Regina University is a private Roman Catholic university in Newport, Rhode Island, United States. It was founded in 1934 by the Sisters of Mercy and is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. The university enrolls more than 2,700 undergraduate and graduate students annually. Claiborne Pell
Claiborne de Borda Pell (November 22, 1918 – January 1, 2009) was an American politician and writer who served as a U.S. Senator from Rhode Island for six terms from 1961 to 1997. He was the sponsor of the 1972 bill that reformed the Basic Educational Opportunity Grant, which provides student financial aid in the United States, financial aid funding to American college students; the Pell grant, grant was given Pell's name in 1980 in honor of his work in education legislation. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, Pell is the longest serving U.S. Senator from Rhode Island. Story In The Public Square
Story in the Public Square is an initiative to study, celebrate and tell stories of interest to the public discourse. It is based at Salve Regina University's Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy, and it has received support from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, the Pulitzer Prize Board, and other sources. Premise Story in the Public Square's guiding premise is that however they are communicated — through text, images, art, music or other means — stories have a unique ability to influence opinions and beliefs that is beyond the cold, hard facts of exposition. Story in the Public Square sponsors seminars, conferences and lectures; supports original scholarship about public storytelling; annually names a local and national story of the year; and annually awards the Pell Center Prize for Story in the Public Square, which recognizes a contemporary storyteller whose work has had a significant impact on the public dialogue.
