It is originated from Portuguese surname Peres and was spread across Sri Lanka during Portuguese rule of the island. Joseph Sriyal Malik Peiris ( Sinhala: ජෝසප් ශ්රියාල් මලික් පීරිස්, born 10 November 1949) is a Hong Kong-based British and Sri Lankan virologist, most notable for being the first person to isolate the SARS virus.He is the current Tam Wah-Ching Professor in Medical Science, and Chair Professor of Virology at the Division of Public Health Laboratory Sciences, School of Public Health, University of Hong Kong. Hiranya Vajramani Peiris is a British astrophysicist at University College London and Stockholm University, best known for her work on the cosmic microwave background radiation. She was one of 27 scientists who received the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2018 for their "detailed maps of the early universe." Education and early life Peiris was born in Sri Lanka. Peter Mohan Maithree Peiris, PC is a Sri Lankan lawyer who served as the Attorney General of Sri Lanka from 2008 to 2011 and was the ''de facto'' Chief Justice of Sri Lanka from 2013 to 2015 when President Maithripala Sirisena declared his appointment void ab initio in 2015. Gate Mudaliyar Edmund Peiris, JP, UM was a Ceylonese colonial-era headman and philanthropist. He was the Mudaliyar of Kalutara and was appointed as a Mudaliyar of the Governor's Gate. His father was Mudaliyar Romanis Peiris, Customs Mudaliyar. Educated at St. John's College Panadura and Colombo Academy, he joined the public service as a clerk and served in the Colombo Kachcheri before being promoted to Muhandiram of Colombo Kachcheri in 1908 and was appointed as the youngest Mudaliyar of Pandadura and Kalutara Totamunes. He held the post for twenty five years retiring with the titular title of Mudaliyar, later to be given the titular title of Mudaliyar of the Governor's Gate. Stanley Peiris (12 June 1941 – 13 October 2002) was a Sri Lankan musician and musical composer. Early life Stanley Peiris was born in Kandy on 12 June 1941 and attended St. Anthony's College, Kandy. He learnt music at the Kandy M.G.C. institute and later joined the Sri Lanka Navy. He then formed a music group, Fortunes, which specialised in performing instrumental music, an innovative idea in the Sinhala pop scene. Amal Peiris ( si, අමල් පීරිස් ; born 7 June 1985) is a Sri Lankan cricketer. He is a left-handed batsman and leg-break bowler who plays for Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club. The Right Reverend Edmund Pieris ( Sinhala: එඩ්මන්ඩ් පීරිස්), O.M.I. (27 December 1897 – 4 September 1989) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Chilaw, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). He was born in Chilaw, the son of Mihindukulasuriya Manuel Diogu Pieris and Weerasinghage Clara Peiris and educated at St. Joseph's College, Colombo. He entered St. Bernard's Seminary in Borello, Colombo to study for the priesthood and was ordained in 1924, after which he graduated in Oriental Studies at the University of London. In 1939 he was consecrated as the Bishop of Chilaw to follow Bishop-elect Louis Perera, who had been appointed as the first bishop but died before he could be consecrated. He introduced Sinhalese culture into the ritual and built many churches and chapels in rural areas. He resigned the episcopy in 1972 to become Bishop Emeritus.
