Peintre Celebre
Peintre Celebre (17 March 1994 – 19 October 2018) was an American-bred, French-trained champion thoroughbred racehorse. He won the French Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 1997. Background Peintre Celebre was bred and owned by Daniel Wildenstein (1917–2001), the French art dealer and horseman. Peintre Celebre came from a line of outstanding thoroughbreds. He was a son of Nureyev, France's champion miler in 1980, who was in turn the son of the great Northern Dancer. He was trained by André Fabre. Racing career Peintre Celebre was lightly raced as a two-year-old, entering only two races, winning one and finishing third in the other. In 1997, at age three, the horse won the French Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris before facing the best horses in Europe in France's most prestigious race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Peintre-graveur
Peintre-graveur () is a term probably invented and certainly popularized by the great scholar of the old master print, Adam Bartsch (Johann Adam Bernhard von Bartsch: 1757 - 1821, both Vienna). The term, meaning "painter-engraver", is intended to distinguish between printmakers, whether working in engraving, etching or woodcut, who designed images with the primary purpose of producing a print, and those who essentially copied in a print medium a composition by another, to produce what is known as a "reproductive print", or who produced only essentially non-artistic work in print form, such as maps for example. "Painter-engraver" is sometimes used in English. Alternative terms for the work of a Peintre-graveur are "artist's print", "original print", "graphic art". "Art print" now tends to mean a reproduction of any work of art. Bartsch's great catalogue of old master prints, published in Vienna in 21 volumes in 1803-21,was called "Le Peintre Graveur". The term ''"peintres voyageurs"'' is a recent term (1993) given by some art historians to the large and diverse group of itinerant French artists - who in many cases spent more time travelling in the French colonies and the Far East than resident in France - from the end of the 19th century to the outbreak of World War II and the ensuing end of the colonial era. The term "peintres voyageurs" derives in most cases from the use of the term by :fr:Lynne Thornton, an English historian writing in French. Prior to Thornton's work the term is found, but without any concept of a "movement" of any artistic or social significance - or of the relation of these painters to the cultural policies of France in its colonies. Peintre De La Marine
Peintre de la Marine (''Painter of the Fleet'') is a title awarded by the minister of defence in France to artists who have devoted their talents to the sea, the French Navy and other maritime subjects. It was set up in 1830 by the July Monarchy and can be awarded to painters, photographers, illustrators, engravers, and sculptors. Rights and privileges The title is unpaid but does grant certain facilities and privileges: *being able to embark on French Navy vessels *wearing a uniform *being allowed to follow one's artistic signature with an anchor *belonging to the Service historique de la Marine. Premier Peintre Du Roi
The ''Premier peintre du Roi'' (''First painter to the King'') was a court painter position within the administration of the ''Bâtiments du Roi'' of the '' Département de la Maison du Roi'' in France under the ''Ancien Régime''. Its holder occupied a similar position to that of ''Premier architecte du Roi'' (albeit a far less prestigious one). The holder was not in charge of any other court staff, and the role was often without a holder. Unlike other countries, the ''Premier peintre'' was often, even usually, not a specialist portrait-painter, but was always a native Frenchman. The most famous holder, Nicolas Poussin, was persuaded to return to France in 1640 to take the office, but returned to Rome after a little more than a year.
