Captain general (and its literal equivalent in several languages) is a high military rank of general officer grade, and a gubernatorial title. José María Téllez-Girón y Benavides (Madrid, 25 May 1685 – 18 May 1733), 7th Duke of Osuna, 7th Marquess of Peñafiel, 11th Count of Ureña, was a Spanish military, diplomat and a Grandee of Spain. Biography He was the second surviving son of Gaspar Téllez-Girón, 5th Duke de Osuna, and his second wife, Ana Antonia de Benavides Carrillo y Toledo, Marquise of Caracena and Countess of Pinto. When his elder brother died without sons in 1716, he became VII Duke of Osuna, after a dispute with his niece María Domínguez Téllez Girón y Velasco, Marquise de Berlanga. In 1704 he attended the Twelfth siege of Gibraltar, Siege of Gibraltar with his brother. In the plans for the 1707 Battle of Almansa, he is already mentioned as ''mariscal de campo''. Jerónimo Valdés (1784–1855) was a Spanish military figure and administrator. Born in Villarín, in Asturias, he participated in the battle of Ayacucho (1824), which was a defeat for the Spanish. He served as Viceroy of Navarre from 1833 to 1834 and also served as Minister of War. He fought on the Liberal (Isabeline) side in the First Carlist War. Valdés lost the Battle of Artaza (22 April 1835). Valdés signed the Lord Eliot Convention soon after, regulating the treatment of prisoners during that war. The Battle of Orbaizeta was fought from 15 to 17 October 1794 during the War of the Pyrenees, between the French Army of the western Pyrenees led by Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey and Spanish forces under the command of Pedro Téllez-Girón, 9th Duke of Osuna. Part of the wider French Revolutionary Wars, this engagement was fought over a wide area to the northwest and northeast of Pamplona in Navarre and ended in a French victory. Bon-Adrien Jeannot de Moncey (or Jannot de Moncey), 1st Duke of Conegliano (31 July 1754 – 20 April 1842) was a French military officer and a prominent commander in the French Revolutionary Wars and later a Marshal of the Empire during the Napoleonic Wars. He later became governor of the Hôtel des Invalides. MONCEY is one of the names inscribed under the Arc de Triomphe, on Column 33.
