Salar De Pedernales
Salar de Pedernales is a large salt flat in the Atacama Region of Chile. It lies east of the Cordillera Domeyko at an elevation of . The salt flat has an irregular shape and consists mostly of gypsum and rock salt, with an area of - covered by open water. During the late Pleistocene, the climate was wetter and thus open water covered a much larger area of Salar de Pedernales. Rocks around Salar de Pedernales range in age from Paleozoic to Miocene. The salt flat formed when during the formation of the Andes, the former course of the was blocked. Presently, the main water source of Salar de Pedernales is the Ola river, which enters from the southeast. The salt flat is a habitat for birds (mainly flamingoes) and lizards. Prehistoric people used resources around the area, leaving numerous archaeological sites. Pedernales (; ) is the southernmost province of the Dominican Republic, including the offshore island of Isla Beata. It was split from Barahona in 1957. Of its 2,074.53 km2, 1374 km2 belong to the Jaragua National Park. A third of its population is of Haitian origin, the highest ratio within the country. The capital of the province, Pedernales, was originally called Juan López, who was a Spanish inhabitant who had settled in the area around the 19th century. Pedernales is a coastal town in Ecuador. It is the capital of Pedernales Canton. Ecuador's Pacific Highway 15 passes through the town and Highway 382 terminates in the town. The Pedernales River ( ) is a tributary of the Colorado River, approximately long, in Central Texas in the United States. It drains an area of the Edwards Plateau, flowing west to east across the Texas Hill Country west of Austin. Pedernales Falls State Park is a 5,212-acre state park situated along the banks of the Pedernales River in Blanco County, Texas in the United States. Location The park is located east of Johnson City, and about 25 miles west of Austin, Texas. History Prior to the year 1970, the area that the park occupies was a working ranch, known as the Circle Bar Ranch. The state of Texas purchased the ranch in 1970, and opened the park in 1971. Recreation Many of the activities in Pedernales Falls State Park center around the Pedernales River: swimming, tubing, wading and fishing. The park also has a number of picnic areas and campsites, including some primitive campsites that require a hike of over two miles to reach. Pedernales is a barrio in the municipality of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. Its population in 2010 was 4,636.
