GFRP
Fiberglass (American English) or fibreglass (English in the Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth English) is a common type of fibre-reinforced plastic, fiber-reinforced plastic using glass fiber. The fibers may be randomly arranged, flattened into a sheet called a chopped strand mat, or woven into glass cloth. The plastic matrix may be a thermoset polymer matrix—most often based on thermosetting polymers such as epoxy, polyester resin, or vinyl ester resin—or a thermoplastic. Cheaper and more flexible than Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers, carbon fiber, it is stronger than many metals by weight, non-magnetic, non-conductive, transparent to electromagnetic radiation, can be molded into complex shapes, and is chemically inert under many circumstances. Applications include aircraft, boats, automobiles, bath tubs and enclosures, swimming pools, hot tubs, septic tanks, water tanks, roofing, pipes, cladding, orthopedic casts, surfboards, and external door skins. Other common name ...

Engineering Consulting Firms
Engineering is the use of scientific principles to design and build machines, structures, and other items, including bridges, tunnels, roads, vehicles, and buildings. The discipline of engineering encompasses a broad range of more specialized fields of engineering, each with a more specific emphasis on particular areas of applied mathematics, applied science, and types of application. See glossary of engineering. The term ''engineering'' is derived from the Latin ''ingenium'', meaning "cleverness" and ''ingeniare'', meaning "to contrive, devise". Definition The American Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD, the predecessor of ABET) has defined "engineering" as: The creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific ...

Fort York Bridge
A fortification is a military construction or building designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and is also used to establish rule in a region during peacetime. The term is derived from Latin ''fortis'' ("strong") and ''facere'' ("to make"). From very early history to modern times, defensive walls have often been necessary for cities to survive in an ever-changing world of invasion and conquest. Some settlements in the Indus Valley civilization were the first small cities to be fortified. In ancient Greece, large stone walls had been built in Mycenaean Greece, such as the ancient site of Mycenae (famous for the huge stone blocks of its 'cyclopean' walls). A Greek '' phrourion'' was a fortified collection of buildings used as a military garrison, and is the equivalent of the Roman castellum or English fortress. These constructions mainly served the purpose of a watch tower, to guard certain roads, passes, and borders. Though smaller than a real fortress, they acted ...

Vilafant Bridge
The High Speed Railway line connecting Barcelona and the French border crosses the Municipality of Vilafant 19 ft (6 m) below the ground level. To cross the sunken railroad, two pedestrian bridges were constructed. The structure, with one span of 150 ft (46 m), is monolithically connected with the abutments. The use of unusual geometric shapes fabricated using stainless-steel and GFRP are blended in an innovative fashion, giving rise to an austere and elegant solution. Description The two gateways projected signal constitute a creative and innovative engineering. The forms are soft, curved in a flat landscape, but the purity of line and transparency achieved consistently relate to the environment. The shape evokes the flight of a butterfly on the flat landscape of the Empordà. The structure is both austere and elegant, audible in the distance but not imposed. It is a metaphor for innovation through the use of advanced materials. Represents a driver of technological d ...

Pedestrian Bridge Over Segre River
Pedestrian Bridge over the Segre River is a bridge in Lleida, Catalonia, Spain. In 2000, Lleida City Council organized an open competition for a new pedestrian bridge. The pedestrian bridge outstands with sober lines, landscape architectural features, and delicate details. It is meant to mark the doorway into the Campus and achieve a double function: communication and public space. Description The best balance of aesthetics, cost, and performance in service (vibrations) has been reached through the selection of a four spans frame long embedded into three slender piers of reinforced concrete. Abutments are integrated into, either existing or new, walls defining a continuous with the built environment of the city. In this way, an integral bridge (without joints at piers) is obtained, in which the deck is fixed elastically and enables an elegant and slender structure. Translucent composite materials (GFRP)-(Fiberglass Fiberglass (American English) or fibreglass (Commonwealth En ...

The Triplets Bridges
Three consecutive Extradosed bridges are part of a north beltway of La Paz in Bolivia. The project was funded by CAF (Corporación Andina de Fomento) through a credit to the Municipality in 2006. In 2007 the Municipal Government of La Paz awarded the design and construction of The Triplets Bridge Project to the JV “Consorcio Asociación Accidental Progreso”. As part of this contract, PEDELTA carried out the conceptual and final detailed design. There was a preliminary design that defined three three-span cable-stayed bridges with central spans between and two cable-stay planes, similar to another existing in the city: the Bridge of the Americas (La Paz), Bridge of the Americas. After a study of alternatives, where the bridge should have a cable supported deck in order to fulfill the technical specifications of the contract, it was proposed to modify the structural type to improve the visual impact on the landscape of La Paz. Therefore, it was proposed an extradosed bridge typ ...

Stainless Steel
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron that is resistant to rusting and corrosion. It contains at least 11% chromium and may contain elements such as carbon, other nonmetals and metals to obtain other desired properties. Stainless steel's corrosion resistance, resistance to corrosion results from the chromium, which forms a Passivation (chemistry), passive film that can protect the material and self-healing material, self-heal in the presence of oxygen. The alloy's properties, such as luster and resistance to corrosion, are useful in many applications. Stainless steel can be rolled into Sheet metal, sheets, plates, bars, wire, and tubing. These can be used in cookware, cutlery, surgical instruments, major appliances, vehicles, construction material in large buildings, industrial equipment (e.g., in paper mills, chemical plants, water treatment), and storage tanks and tankers for chemicals and food products. The biological cleanability of stainless steel is superior to both alumi ...

Abetxuko Bridge
The Abetxuko Bridge is a steel girder bridge with organic forms in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Álava, Basque Country, Spain. The Abetxuko Bridge over the Zadorra River is one of several projects being built by Vitoria council to improve mobility for its citizens and, above all, for the inhabitants of the Abetxuko area who for several decades have only been able to reach the city centre via an old, -wide bridge. The narrow deck on the old bridge only has space for two carriageways and a narrow pedestrian walkway. Crossing the bridge was risky for pedestrians as they are so close to the traffic, a danger which the council decided to eliminate in 2005. Also the old bridge had limited hydraulic capacity. It remains just to the east of the current bridge. The construction of the bridge was also central to the regeneration plan for the area (the green corridor of Vitoria). The project was intended to improve the mobility between the Abetxuko neighbourhood and the centre of Vitoria, connecting t ...
