Peconic is a census-designated place (CDP) that roughly corresponds to the hamlet by the same name in the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The CDP population was 683 at the 2010 census. History The community derives its name from Peconic Bay, which in turn derives its name from a Native American word meaning "nut trees". The area was originally called "Hermitage", and the name "Peconic" was adopted later. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, it was home to the Peconic School, an artist colony initially led by painters Benjamin Rutherfurd Fitz, Edward August Bell, Henry Prellwitz and Edith Mitchill Prellwitz. Albert Einstein was staying in Peconic in 1939 when he signed the famous Einstein–Szilárd letter to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Riverhead is a town within Suffolk County, New York, United States, on the north shore of Long Island. Since 1727, Riverhead has been the county seat of Suffolk County, though most county offices are in Hauppauge. As of the 2020 census, the population was 35,902. The town rests on the mouth of the Peconic River, from which it derives its name. The smaller hamlet of Riverhead lies within it, and is the town's principal economic center. Peconic County () is a proposed new county on Long Island in the U.S. state of New York that would secede the five easternmost towns of Suffolk County: East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton and Southold, plus the Shinnecock Indian Reservation. It derives its name from Peconic Bay which is the dividing body of water separating the North and South forks of Long Island. Peconic County has been discussed for more than 50 years – ever since Suffolk County moved its offices from the official county seat in Riverhead 32 miles west to Hauppauge, New York, in more densely populated western Suffolk County. USS ''Peconic'' (AOG-68), was a type T1 built for the US Navy during World War II. She was named after the Peconic River, in New York. Construction ''Peconic'' was laid down on 31 January 1945, under a Maritime Commission (MARCOM) contract, MC hull 2628, by the St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company, Jacksonville, Florida; sponsored by Mrs. Mal Haughton, Jr.; acquired on a loan basis by the Navy 28 September 1945; and commissioned 29 September 1945. Service history ''Peconic'' reported to Commander Service Force Atlantic at Norfolk, Virginia, 27 November. Because of reduced need following the war's end, she decommissioned 4 January 1946, at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, was struck from the Navy List 21 January, and returned to the Maritime Commission (MARCOM).
