Pechey, Queensland
Pechey is a rural locality in the Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Pechey had a population of 105 people. Geography The New England Highway passes through the centre of the town, and the Pechey-Maclagan Road exits to the west. Pechey State Forest occupies the entire south east corner of the area. History The town was named after Edward Wilmot Pechey (Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the Electoral district of Aubigny 1873-1877). He was also a surveyor and sawmill owner. Pechey Provisional School opened on 19 March 1889. On 1 January 1909 it became Pechey State School. It closed in 1959. St Faith's Anglican Church was dedicated on 10 September 1911 by the Venerable Archdeacon Arthur Rivers. In February 1931 it was relocated to Virginia (now Pierces Creek), where it was re-dedicated on 1 March 1930 by Archdeacon Glover. Pechey Forestry Arboretum
Pechey Forestry Arboretum is a heritage-listed forest reserve at Pechey State Forest, New England Highway, Pechey, Toowoomba Region, Queensland, Australia. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 23 July 1999. History In 1910 the then Under Secretary of the Department of Public Lands in which Forestry was a sub-department, wrote that the needs of Queensland pine timber would have to be met by exotic varieties secured by importation in a manufactured state or from local plantations on land incapable of producing indigenous varieties. Arboreta are plots of land where different varieties of trees and plants are planted by government or research bodies to determine suitability of plantings in particular climate, soil type and topography conditions. As an example of the scientific research into the viable varieties of exotic plantings the Pechey Forestry Arboretum was established. Alfred Pechey
Alfred John Pechey (1840 – 5 June 1882) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born at Soham in Cambridgeshire to the Reverend William Pechey, a Baptist minister, and Sarah Rotton. He migrated to Australia around 1865 and worked as a surveyor near Bathurst. On 12 April 1865 he married Anthonina Jane Rotton, the daughter of Henry Rotton. Archibald Thomas Pechey
Archibald Thomas Pechey (26 September 1876 in West Ham, Essex – 29 November 1961 in Wells, Somerset, England) often credited as Valentine, was an English lyricist and novelist. The pen name Valentine was derived from his mother's family the Vallentins, who were London distillers. Pechey's maternal grandfather Sir James Vallentin (1814–1870) was Knight Sheriff of London, and Master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers. By the 1880s Pechey's uncle Grimble Vallentine was running the business in Lambeth. His cousin John Franks Vallentin (1882–1914) was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1914. Pechey as "Valentine" often wrote lyrics in conjunction with composer James W. Tate, including for ''The Beauty Spot''. Songs written by Tate and Valentine (with F. Clifford Harris) include "A Bachelor Gay" and "A Paradise for Two" (both 1917, from ''The Maid of the Mountains''). Edith Pechey
Mary Edith Pechey (7 October 1845 – 14 April 1908) was one of the first women doctors in the United Kingdom and a campaigner for women's rights. She spent more than 20 years in India as a senior doctor at a women's hospital and was involved in a range of social causes. Family and Edinburgh Mary Edith Pechey was born in Langham, Essex, to Sarah (''née'' Rotton), a lawyer's daughter who, unusually for a woman of her generation, had studied Greek, and William Pechey, a Baptist minister with an MA in theology from the University of Edinburgh. After being educated by her parents, she worked as governess and teacher until 1869. Lutzker notes that "Her mother also was competent in Greek and other studies and both parents possessed - along with their questing nonconformist minds - a deep and serious love of learning." Edward Wilmot Pechey (9 November 1841 – 28 April 1904) was a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Queensland, Australia. Early life Edward Pechey was born on 9 November 1841 in Langham near Colchester, Essex, England, the son of William Pechey and his wife Sarah (née Rotton). He immigrated to Sydney in 1858 and relocated to Queensland about 1869. He married Helen Maria Bond in Toowoomba on 19 September 1872. Business life As assistant surveyor to the Queensland Government Surveyor, Henry Haig, he surveyed Condamine and Campbell's Camp. He was involved with the sawmills at Highfields and Crows Nest. He also speculated in real estate in the Toowoomba area. Politics On 11 November 1873 in the 1873 colonial elections, Pechey was elected to Queensland Legislative Assembly in the seat of Aubigny.
