The Pearl and Bess Meyer House is a historic house located at 233 E. 2nd St. in Flora, Illinois, Flora, Illinois. The house was built in 1912 for Pearl Meyer, who owned a local dry goods store, and his wife Bess. Frank S. Nichols, the former mayor of Flora and contractor for the city's Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Depot (Flora, Illinois), Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Depot, built the house in the Queen Anne style architecture in the United States, Queen Anne style. The house's main entrance is within a wraparound front porch supported by wooden columns; the oak front doors include beveled glass panels and decorative moldings. Flora is a city in Clay County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,803 at the 2020 census. History Flora was founded by Samuel White. White was born September 10, 1831 in Warren County, Ohio. He and his family came to Clay County in 1852. During that time, he purchased of land from the State of Illinois. His first wife, Sarah Ann Wall was born in 1833. Sarah died December 13, 1859 in Flora, and is buried in the family plot in Elmwood Cemetery. In December 1860, White married Helen M. Riggs in Flora. Flora station is a historic Baltimore & Ohio Railroad depot which served Flora, Illinois. The depot was built from 1916 to 1917 by Frank Nichols; its design features several architectural styles, including Italian Renaissance Revival, Romanesque Revival, and Classical Revival. After the depot opened, the B&O Railroad became the largest employer in Flora, employing approximately half of the town's population through the mid-1920s, and was credited with the town's growth and economic success. Queen Anne Style Architecture In The United States
Queen Anne style architecture was one of a number of popular Victorian architectural styles that emerged in the United States during the period from roughly 1880 to 1910. Popular there during this time, it followed the Second Empire and Stick styles and preceded the Richardsonian Romanesque and Shingle styles. Sub-movements of Queen Anne include the Eastlake movement.
