Peaceful Families Project
The Peaceful Families Project (PFP) is among the pioneering Muslim organizations working to end domestic violence in Muslim families and communities. A national organization established in Northern Virginia in 2000, they provide Islamically grounded awareness workshops for Muslim community leaders and members, and cultural sensitivity trainings for professionals serving Muslims. Foundation PFP was founded by Sharifa Alkhateeb (1946-2004) in the year 2000. Alkhateeb was a pioneer who spent 40 years advocating for the civil rights of Muslims in the United States, and for Muslim women's rights in particular. She worked on behalf of Muslim victims of domestic violence, and collaborated with Muslim leaders and communities across the nation from 2000-2004 conducting workshops to raise awareness levels. Sharifa Alkhateeb
Sharifa Tahiya Alkhateeb (nee Ahmad Bey June 6, 1946 – October 21, 2004) was an American writer, researcher and teacher on cultural communication and community building for Islam and Muslims in the United States. She was involved in feminist causes, domestic violence prevention, as well as interfaith and educational organizations. She founded the first nationwide organization for Muslim women in the US and was the first woman to receive the Community Service Award from the Islamic Society of North America. Biography Sharifa Alkhateeb was born on June 6, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her father was Abdullah Ahmad Bey, who immigrated from Yemen and her mother was Anna Louise Ahmad Bey (née Anna Louise Folkerstein Jordan; 1919-1961) of Czechoslovakian descent. Islam And Domestic Violence
The relationship between Islam and domestic violence is disputed. Even among Muslims, the uses and interpretations of Sharia, the moral code and religious law of Islam, lack consensus. Variations in interpretation are due to different schools of Islamic jurisprudence, histories and politics of religious institutions, conversions, reforms, and education. Domestic violence among the Muslim community is considered a complicated human rights issue due to varying legal remedies for women by the nations where they live, the extent to which they have support or opportunities to divorce their husbands, cultural stigma to hide evidence of abuse, and inability to have abuse recognized by police or the judicial system in some Muslim nations. AHA Foundation
The AHA Foundation is a nonprofit organization for the defense of women's rights. It was founded by Ayaan Hirsi Ali in 2007 and is based in New York City. Originally formed to support Muslim dissidents who had suffered for their religious or political beliefs, the organization's scope was broadened September 2008 to focus on women's rights. The goal of the AHA Foundation is to combat crimes against women and girls such as child marriage, forced marriages, female genital mutilation and honor killings.
