Paykullia Maculata
''Paykullia maculata'' is a species of fly in the subfamily Rhinophorinae first described by Carl Fredrik Fallén in 1815. Distribution This species can be found in most of Europe ( Austria, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Norway, Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Netherlands) Habitats include wetlands, woodlands, parks and gardens. Description ''Paykullia maculata'' can reach a length of . The adults of this species are very variable, especially in size and in the pattern of wing markings. These small flies have a shining black body with bristly hair. The apical half of the wings show darkened veins and costal area. Biology Adults can be seen from May to September, with several generations. Usually they rest or run around on stones or among the foliage. The larvae are intestinal parasites of ''Porcellio scaber'' and '' Oniscus asellus'', and woodlice from '' Protracheoniscus'' and ''Trachelipus ''T ...

Gabriel Strobl
Gabriel Strobl (3 November 1846 in Unzmarkt, Styria, Austrian Empire – 15 March 1925 in Admont, Benediktinerstift) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and entomologist who specialised in Diptera. In 1866 the then 20-year-old Gabriel Strobl became a Roman Catholic priest monk (''Pater'') at the Benedictine monastery Admont Abbey (Stift Admont). A devastating Monastery fire in 1865 had destroyed the Natural History Cabinet (a museum) and its contents which had included Joseph Stammel’s Universe. He was entrusted by Abbot Karlmann Hieber (served 1861-1868) with rebuilding the Natural History Museum. In 44 years of work - until his stroke in 1910 - Gabriel Strobl built up the Museum anew. In his first 12 years of work, he devoted himself principally to botany, before dedicating himself completely to entomology for the following 32 years. Although his published work is mainly on Diptera he also worked on Hymenoptera and Coleoptera of the Balkan peninsula which was partially ru ...

Johan Wilhelm Zetterstedt
Johan Wilhelm Zetterstedt (20 May 1785 – 23 December 1874) was a Swedish naturalist who worked mainly on Diptera and Hymenoptera. Biography Zetterstedt studied at the University of Lund, where he was a pupil of Anders Jahan Retzius. He received the title of professor in 1822 and succeeded Carl Adolph Agardh as professor of botany and practical economy in 1836, retiring as emeritus in 1853. In 1831, he was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He is best known as an entomologist. His collections of Scandinavian, Lapland and world Diptera and Orthoptera are in the Zoological Museum of the University of Lund. His students include Anders Gustaf Dahlbom. Selected works *1810-1812 ''Dissertatio de Fæcundatione Plantarum'' *1821 ''Orthoptera Sueciae disposita et descripta''. Calliphoridae
The Calliphoridae (commonly known as blow flies, blow-flies, carrion flies, bluebottles, greenbottles, or cluster flies) are a family of insects in the order Diptera, with almost 1,900 known species. The maggot larvae, often used as fishing bait, are known as gentles. The family is known to be polyphyletic, but much remains disputed regarding proper treatment of the constituent taxa, some of which are occasionally accorded family status (e.g., Bengaliidae and Helicoboscidae). The name blowfly comes from an older English term for meat that had eggs laid on it, which was said to be flyblown. The first known association of the term "blow" with flies appears in the plays of William Shakespeare: '' Love's Labour's Lost'', '' The Tempest'', and '' Antony and Cleopatra''. Description Characteristics Calliphoridae adults are commonly shiny with metallic colouring, often with blue, green, or black thoraces and abdomens. Antennae are three-segmented and aristate. The aristae are pl ...

Jean-Baptiste Robineau-Desvoidy
André Jean Baptiste Robineau-Desvoidy (1 January 1799 in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye – 25 June 1857 in Paris) was a French physician and entomologist specialising in the study of Diptera (flies) and to some extent of the Coleoptera (beetles). Achievements Because he worked on difficult to identify flies (specifically the Schizophora), the existing descriptions of which were poor, and because he had few contacts, many of the new species he described were already named. Also he was over reliant on colour and pattern as characters, and this led to his improperly defining species. He also worked on too many species. Much later criticism ensued but it must be remembered that he was an early worker and, in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, French scientists were unduly criticised for nationalistic reasons. Very many of his generic and species names survive. In all these respects, as well as his genuine love of entomology and boundless enthusiasm, Robineau-Desvoidy is remini ...
