Payette County is a county located in Idaho in the United States of America. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,623. The county seat and largest city is Payette. Payette County is part of the Ontario micropolitan area. History The county was established in 1917, partitioned from Canyon County. It was named after the Payette River, which was named after French-Canadian François Payette. Originally a fur trapper with the North West Company, Payette was the first white man in the area in 1818. Payette County is one of the few counties in Idaho to be the home to the endangered Idaho ground squirrel. Payette Lake is a natural lake in the western United States, located in west central Idaho at McCall. Formed by glacial activity, it is situated in the upper drainage basin of the Payette River, which drains into the Snake River. Outflow from the lake at its southwest corner is regulated for irrigation purposes by a small dam completed in 1943. The normal maximum lake surface elevation of above sea level is attained in July; a normal drawdown of is completed by December. The lake's surface area and volume, excluding islands, are and , respectively; mean and maximum depths are and , respectively; and shoreline length is about . The Payette National Forest is a U.S. National Forest located in central western Idaho, in parts of Valley, Idaho, Adams, and Washington counties. The land area consists of approximately 2.3 million acres (9,300 km2) of federally managed lands. It is bordered by Hells Canyon National Recreation Area and the Hells Canyon to the west, Salmon-Challis National Forest to the east, Boise National Forest to the south, and the Nez Perce National Forest to the north. The Payette National Forest is a part of the Intermountain Region (Region 4). It is under the jurisdiction of a forest supervisor in McCall and is divided into five ranger districts: McCall, Krassel, New Meadows, Council, and Weiser. Andre Payette (29 July 1976 – 28 September 2022) was a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger. Payette was drafted in 1994 by the NHL Philadelphia Flyers, and won a Calder Cup with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Philadelphia Phantoms. Payette signed for the Manchester Phoenix of the English Premier Ice Hockey League in the summer of 2009, following the organisation's move into the EPL from the EIHL. Payette is known for his physical play and amassed more than 3,000 minutes in the penalty box during his time in the United Kingdom. Brayden Payette (born April 6, 2000) is a Canadian curler from Brandon, Manitoba. He currently plays second on Team Jacques Gauthier. Career Payette joined the Jacques Gauthier rink at second for the 2019–20 season with Jordan Peters at third and Zack Bilawka at lead. Before this, he played with Chase Dusessoy from 2015 to 2017 and skipped his own team from 2017 to 2019. Francois Payette
François Payette (1793 – post 1844) was a North American fur trader. Born near Montreal, he began his career as a canoeman, was hired by John Jacob Astor and shipped to the Oregon Country aboard the Tonquin, entering the mouth of the Columbia River on May 9, 1812. With the sale of Astor's Pacific Fur Company to the North West Company in 1813, Payette joined the NWC, "accompanying numerous expeditions into the interior." When the Hudson's Bay Company absorbed the North West Company in 1821, Payette transferred allegiance to the HBC. He took part in notable fur gathering-trading expeditions throughout the upper Rockies and was an occasional interpreter, sometimes second in command of brigades, and clerk. Julie Payette (; born October 20, 1963) is a Canadian engineer, scientist and former astronaut who served from 2017 to 2021 as Governor General of Canada, the 29th since Canadian Confederation. Payette holds engineering degrees from McGill University and the University of Toronto. She worked as a research scientist before joining the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) in 1992 as a member of the Canadian Astronaut Corps.
