Paxos
Paxos ( gr, Παξός) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, lying just south of Corfu. As a group with the nearby island of Antipaxos and adjoining islets, it is also called by the plural form Paxi or Paxoi ( gr, Παξοί, pronounced in English and in Greek). The main town and the seat of the municipality is Gaios. The smallest of the seven main Ionian Islands (the Heptanese), Paxos has an area of , while the municipality has an area of and a population of about 2300. Paxos lies some 15 km from the southern tip of Corfu, and at about the same distance from the town of Parga on the mainland. It is connected by ferry lines from Igoumenitsa and Corfu with Gaios. The island is hilly, the highest point having an elevation of 230 m. Battle Of Paxos
The Battle of Paxos was a naval battle between a coalition of Illyrian federation with their Acarnanian allies, against the allies of Corcyra (modern Corfu), the Achaean League and Aetolian League. The battle took place in the spring of 229 BC and was a direct consequence to the siege of Corcyra by the forces of queen Teuta. Polybius describes a cunning maritime stratagem mastered by the Illyrian fleet. The Illyrians took four triremes and sank a quinquereme, while the rest of the Greeks managed to escape. Illyrian Wars
The Illyro-Roman Wars were a series of wars fought between the Roman Republic and the Ardiaei kingdom. In the ''First Illyrian War'', which lasted from 229 BC to 228 BC, Rome's concern was that the trade across the Adriatic Sea increased after the First Punic War at a time when Ardiaei power increased under queen Teuta. Gaios
Gaios ( el, Γάιος, ) is the main port on Paxos, the smallest of the seven principal Ionian Islands, in Greece. Gaios is situated on the east coast of the island. Antipaxos
Antipaxos ( el, Αντίπαξος, ) is a small island (5 km²) in Greece, about to the south of Paxos. It is administratively part of the municipality of Paxoi in Corfu regional unit in western Greece. , the resident population of the island was 20. HMS Apollo (1805)
HMS ''Apollo'', the fifth ship of the Royal Navy to be named for the Greek god Apollo, was a fifth-rate frigate of the ''Lively'' class, carrying 38 guns, launched in 1805 and broken up in 1856. Napoleonic Wars ''Apollo'' was commissioned in July 1805 under Captain Edward Fellowes, who sailed her for the Mediterranean on 26 January 1806. In 1806 she operated off southern Italy. On 5 June boats from ''Apollo'' brought out a French brig near Agie Finucana, in the Gulf of Taranto, where the brig had run aground. The brig was transporting six 24-pounder guns, together with their carriages. The cutting out party had to work through the night under small-arms fire from the shore, as well as fire from a field piece. Lakka, Greece
Lakka ( el, Λάκκα, ) is a village situated on Paxi, a Greece, Greek Island in the Ionian Sea approximately south of Corfu. Geography Lakka is the second largest village in size on the northern end of Paxos and is flanked by silver green olive groves and Cupressus, cypress trees. The picturesque fishing village is located on a natural, almost circular harbor created by two headlands sheltering the bay from the open sea. Tourism Lakka is a popular tourist destination for yachting, windsurfing, snorkeling and swimming. The two main beaches within the Lakka bay, white pebbled Kanoni and sandy Harami lead to a very clear turquoise sea. Parga ( el, Πάργα ) is a town and municipality located in the northwestern part of the regional unit of Preveza in Epirus, northwestern Greece. The seat of the municipality is the village Kanallaki.
