Pawlu Aquilina
Pawlu Aquilina (August 28, 1929 – January 29, 2009) was a Malta, Maltese poet and writer from Siġġiewi, Malta. He studied at the Archbishop's Seminary and St Michael's Training College for Teachers. In 1950 Aquilina started his teaching career in the Maltese Government Primary Schools until 1957 when he was appointed scriptwriter with the Department of Information - Education Broadcasting Section. In 1959 he was appointed Master of Maltese at The Lyceum. In 1978 he became assistant headmaster and in 1986 was appointed headmaster. He retired in 1990. Aquilina wrote various poems and essays, radio features and many educational broadcasts for school children. On request from the Jesuit provincial, the poet Fr Ġuże Delia S.J., he translated the historical-religious verse drama ''El Divino Impaciente'' from the English version 'A Saint in a Hurry' of the well known Spanish poet and writer José María Pemán. Dun Karm Psaila
Carmelo Psaila, better known as Dun Karm (Żebbuġ, 18 October 1871 – 13 October 1961) was a Maltese priest, writer and poet, sometimes called 'the bard of Malta'. He is widely recognised as the Maltese national poet. Life He was educated at the seminary between the years 1885 and 1894 and then proceeded to study philosophy in 1888 and theology in 1890 the University of Malta. He was ordained priest in 1894. From 1895 to 1921 he taught various subjects at the seminary: Italian, Latin, English, arithmetic, geography, cosmography, ecclesiastical history and Christian archaeology. In 1921 he was appointed assistant librarian at the National Library of Malta and in 1923 director of circulating libraries, a post he held till his retirement in 1936. Siġġiewi Local Council
Siġġiewi ( mt, Is-Siġġiewi, ), also called by its title Città Ferdinand, is a city and a local council in the Southern Region of Malta. It is the third largest council in Malta by surface area, after Rabat and Mellieħa respectively. It is situated on a plateau, a few kilometres away from Mdina, the ancient capital city of Malta, and away from Valletta, the contemporary capital. It is the home of 8367 inhabitants as of March 2014. Until several decades ago, most of the population was employed in the fields which surround the village. In 1993, the city adopted the motto ''Labore et Virtute'' (Work and Virtue). History In its demographic and topographical formation, Siġġiewi followed a pattern common to other villages in Malta. Before the arrival of the Order of St John in 1530, there were other thriving hamlets in the area. Oliver Friggieri
Oliver Friggieri (27 March 194721 November 2020) was a Maltese poet, novelist, literary critic, and philosopher. He led the establishment of literary history and criticism in Maltese while teaching at the University of Malta, studying the works of Dun Karm, Rużar Briffa, and others. A prolific writer himself, Friggieri explored new genres to advocate the Maltese language, writing the libretti for the first oratorio and the first cantata in Maltese. His work aimed to promote the Maltese cultural identity, while not shying from criticism: one of his most famous novels, ''Fil-Parlament Ma Jikbrux Fjuri'' (No Flowers Grow in Parliament, 1986), attacked the tribalistic divisions of society caused by politics.
