Kupchyntsi, Ternopil Oblast
Купчинці ( uk, Kupchyntsi) is a village in Kupchyntsi rural hromada, Ternopil Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. History The first written mention dates back to 1312. In the village there was also a castle built in the 17th century, which has not survived to this day. Vasyl Semenovych Stefanyk ( uk, Васи́ль Семе́нович Стефа́ник; May 14, 1871 – December 7, 1936) was an influential Ukrainian modernist writer and political activist. He was a member of the Austrian parliament from 1908 to 1918. Biography Early years Vasyl Stefanyk was born on May 14, 1871 in the village of Rusiv in the family of a well-to-do peasant. He was born in the historical region of Pokuttia, then part of Austria-Hungary. Today it is part of Kolomyia Raion, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. He died on December 7, 1936 in the same village, Rusiv, at that time the part of Poland. His primary education Stefanyk was at the Sniatyn City school. He later studied at Polish gymnasia in Kolomyia and Drohobych. He was expelled from the Kolomea gymnasium for the participation in a revolutionary group. Ivan Yakovych Franko (Ukrainian: Іван Якович Франко, pronounced ˈwɑn ˈjɑkowɪtʃ frɐnˈkɔ 27 August 1856 – 28 May 1916) was a Ukrainian poet, writer, social and literary critic, journalist, interpreter, economist, political activist, doctor of philosophy, ethnographer, and the author of the first detective novels and modern poetry in the Ukrainian language. He was a political radical, and a founder of the socialist and nationalist movement in western Ukraine. In addition to his own literary work, he also translated the works of such renowned figures as William Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Dante Alighieri, Victor Hugo, Adam Mickiewicz, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller into Ukrainian. Drahomanivka, Ternopil Oblast
Drahomanivka ( uk, Драгоманівка) is a village in Kupchyntsi rural hromada, Ternopil Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. History The first settler of the village was Petro Bilyi, who built a house there in 1876, and dug a well and a pond for fish farming. Later, Stefan Harmatii built a house next to his, and then others followed suit. The hamlet was named Mykytsivka (Mykytivka) after the first settler, Bilyi, whose family was called Mykytsi. In 1890, Stefan Harmatii, one of the village's wealthiest landowners, wanted the village to be called Harmatiivka, but the poet and well-known cultural and public figure Pavlo Dumka (who settled in the town in 1895) and the prominent Ukrainian poet Ivan Franko advised the residents to name the settlement Drahomanivka in honor of the great Ukrainian scientist and writer, prominent public figure Mykhailo Drahomanov.
