Paulus Van Der Veen
Paul van der Veen Does (c. 1660 - 16 August 1733, Gorcum) was from 1696 to 1706 governor of Surinam, succeeding Johan van Scharphuizen. The next twenty-five years, until his death, he was a member of the board of the Society of Surinam. He was the son of Balthasar van der Veen and Susanna Pels. His uncle was Andries Pels, a rich Amsterdam banker and insurer. He married Anna van Gelre, a mayor's daughter from Zierikzee Zierikzee () is a small city in the southwest Netherlands, 50 km southwest of Rotterdam. Johan Van Scharphuizen
Joan or Johan van Scharphuysen, Scharphuizen or Jan van Scherpenhuizen (died 15 January 1699) was a Dutch colonist, a judge in Suriname (Dutch colony), Suriname, a slave-trader, colonial governor from 1689 to 1696 on behalf of the Society of Surinam, (''Sociëteit van Suriname'') and a considerable plantation-owner. Life Van Scharphuizen most probably had his roots in Zeeland: he was a brother-in-law to both Johannes Basseliers, the first Dutch vicar in Suriname (1668) and a rich planter, and to Jan Meunicx, both originating from Middelburg, Zeeland, Middelburg, where the Dutch West India Company had a strong base. The Meunicx family, regents and respected traders, settled as one of the first Dutch families in Suriname arriving just before or after Francis Willoughby, 5th Baron Willoughby of Parham had left the colony. The Society of Suriname (Dutch: ''Sociëteit van Suriname'') was a Dutch private company, modelled on the ideas of Jean-Baptiste Colbert and set up on 21 May 1683 to profit from the management and defense of the Dutch Republic's colony of Suriname. It had three participants, with equal shares in the costs and benefits of the society; the city of Amsterdam, the family Van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck, and the Dutch West India Company. Only through mutual consent could these shareholders withdraw from the society. Although the organization and administration was of the colony was limited to these three shareholders, all citizens of the Dutch Republic were free to trade with Suriname. Andries Pels (1655 - 1731)
Andries Pels (2 September 1655, in Amsterdam – 8 February 1731) was a rich Dutch banker and insurer from Amsterdam. He was the banker of France in the era of John Law. He was nephew of his namesake, poet Andries Pels, and cousin to the colonial governor Paulus van der Veen. In 1742 his widow, Angenita Pels-Bouwens (1660–1749), was the richest woman in Amsterdam, living at the Golden Bend. Pels formed the partnership Andries Pels & Soonen, dealing in luxury goods, insurance, and currency, in 1707 that lasted until 1774. Both his sons died in 1741. His daughter Johanna Sara Pels married Jan Bernd Bicker in 1720. Their sons Henric en Jan Bernd Bicker managed the bank from 1750.
